Mean Things You Did As a Youngster

I used to mow the lawns for my Grandparents. My little brother wanted to help one day. It was a reel drive mower - walk behind and a roller at the back - self drive, and speed adjusted by the throttle.

Well, I set my brother up, dumped the clutch, and when he was off and away, I pushed the throttle hard onto full.

I was not popular....brother didn't like mowing lawns after that.

Just a few months ago, well, actually during our lockdowns, he started buying up old versions and restoring them. He actually makes a decent job, considering how rough he normally is.

My kid buddy next door had a homemade small pool in the backyard, lots and lots of frogs. His Dad smoked and kept a large can of Ronco cigarette lighter fluid on his "smoking table". We stole it, and would force fill up a frogs gut, soak him down and light it off. He usually made a hop or two before a big flame up final roast. When we got old enough get firecrackers, they got force-fed one and a light off. Most crackers would just turn them inside out, but Black Cats would hardly leave a greasy spot. Mean little rascals we were at times. My buddy grew up, went to med school , and is still a practicing brain surgeon today.
