Ordered a correct, press molded insulation pad and started to install it but realized I failed to order a clip set. But I did have a few spare clips from my 67 GTX so I thought I could get it at least stuck under there and out of the way in a safe place while ordering some new clips.

This one seems thicker than the one I put on my 67 GTX years ago. I struggled to get it on at the time but on this one the clip barbs barely reached the back end of the pad and the middle ones in the hood reinforcement ribs barely even peak past the back of the pad.

Before I order more clips has anyone got any good tips on installing one of these and getting the clips in far enough to engage the hood reinforcement. Has anyone seen any longer clips that might work? I'm thinking a small block of wood on the clip and smack it with a small rubber hammer but that runs the chance of damaging the pad surface. I don't see any hope on the six interior ones as the clips are just too short. That runs the risk of it sagging and rubbing on the air cleaner (chrome).

Other alternative is just leave it off - paint looks good.

Ive not had good luck with any of the repop metal clips .

So I just leave the hood pads off. if you hit it with any force you risk breaking the clip or damaging the pad. or most likely both.
My car never had the pad anyway

And personally,,,,,,I like the reflection of the air cleaner in the bottom side of the hood

I think I’m starting to lean that way too - especially since I would need to order about 26 clips.

I got my metal clips from this guy for my '70 Bird... see if he has '67 (if they are different than '70's that is.. )

Dadsbee, your interior clips on the pad appear to sit in a round, compressed areas. Did you do that or was8 it molded like that? My pad doesn’t have the depressed areas. My pad is from R.E.M. Those appear to be the same clips.

My pad is an REM pad. Nicely formed but terribly brittle material. I sprayed it with tremclad clear to mat the fibers together somewhat. Yes, the "crop circles" were moulded into it when received!

Well, that would make a big difference.

I wonder if I could take a heavy fender type washer, play a heat gun over the area and with the washer secured to a peace of all thread and press it into the surface for a minute or so with a wood block on the back for support to buck it up.

I ordered a nice molded hood felt also. All holes line up, looks great but as above, very brittle. I was able to pull all of my original hood clips w no damage. Definitely too short to go through new pad. Maybe if I took hood off, laid it upside down and pressed them in. But everything I do is by myself and not interested in wrestling the hood off and maneuver it around by myself. So the pad has sat in my garage in the rafters for 1-1/2 yrs now.

That’s pretty much what I’m facing. I may try to call REM and see if they have any suggestions - if they will answer a phone call.

Is Tremclad rust paint supposed to be used for locking in the fibers on fiberglass insulation? And is it oil based? which might make it flamable? Just asking?

Had very poor luck with The aftermarket steel clips .....they all suck.....I sourced original ones for my 68 roadrunner through a member here......upon examination.....I think the steel quality in the new clips are junk .....versus real deal Canadian/ us steel of 50 years ago much stronger .....once again only my findings

Do you have one of those clips left over, and could measure the length of the barbs below the flat part?
If not don’t try to remove one to measure - they are too big a pain to deal with.

I think I used them all, but I'l have a look when I get a chance. Not going back out again today, over 95F outside and my spares are in a 40' marine container...

You have to get after them but they go in. The pad will compress. Use the handle of a hammer to push them, just get them started first. These were the OE clips that I EvapoRust’d and lightly sprayed with cast blast. I should have phosphated them.

I bought a molded pad from Classic Industries, then ordered their plastic clips. The clips go in, then pop out by themselves.

Sorry, got a bit distracted with the Granddaughters arrival, but bumped into them cleaning up the shop today. 7/16" total barb length, best I can measure.

I got the pad on with the exception of the back row of clips. A couple of them broke through the surface crust of the pad but they are in there and holding so it is what it is. I ordered a few more clips from Detroit Muscle that they claim have longer barbs. I’ll check them out but it would take probably an inch long barb to get through that area.
