Mopar Sunday - Australia

Had a great day yesterday at Mopar Sunday, the annual get together for a show and drag racing anything Mopar.

It's held at Willowbank Raceway in sunny Queensland. I ended up doing 7 passes, 5 qualifying and then 2 rounds in the Bracket racing. Got knocked out after a ridiculously slow reaction time.

To be fair to my car, it's not fast (14.3 is my best time with the TKX), and isn't a show car, but I can drive it 75 miles to the track, hammer it all day and drive 75 miles home and it never misses a beat.

A 14.3 run is quite respectable. Some nice cars there....thanks for sharing the pictures. :thumbsup:

I love seeing the different styles of the Mopars there. The black "Valiant" that looks a LOT like a '69 Dart and what is the green "Duster" here ?

The taillights look unusual. The orange Daytona with the hemi and side mounted blower....Really cool stuff!
Nice '66 Satellite too.
 
There were many more cars, but I was so busy "racing" I didn't get time to see them or photograph them.
The Duster was highly modified, restomod type of car. It had a big block in it, was quite fast.
I was speaking to the Daytona owner for a while. He said it was a legitimate 68 six pack Charger that was modified (I don't think that was an option in '68 though). It was pretty scruffy and ran like a dog. He only did one run and abandoned ship. It was in need of some serious tuning. It had a 950 double pumper but had no jets in it to allow more fuel (never heard of that, maybe it’s a thing). The owner was very frustrated with it, a supercharged hemi running slicks shouldn't be in the 13's.

The two door black 'Dart' was just called a Valiant here & there were two models, VF & VG designations sold between 1969 & 1971. Biggest engine available was 318. These cars were ' left over' 1967-8 US Darts. The bodies, from the front windscreen back were shipped complete to Oz & local sheet front metal added. I owned a VG, had a stroked 383 in it. The bodies lasted longer than the locally made 4 door cars because the rust proofing was better.
 
There was a guy I knew that imported a car like that black Valiant, his was blue.
It was like you stated...from the windshield rearward it looked identical to a USA Dart except for the "Valiant" letters on the back. The fenders looked longer and had turn signals on the tops near the headlights. It was right hand drive and had what looked like a weird steering linkage design where the steering box attached to the frame rail instead of the K member like ours here do. The idler and Pitman arms pointed forward while ours point rearward.
I understand that there were restrictions based on local content laws to where "import" cars had to include a percentage of components that were sourced within the country in which they would be sold. We were told that this is why your versions had the 265 straight six instead of the USA/Canada slant six. I wondered if maybe you used the upright straight six for steering clearance since the slant six would occupy the same space you use for the steering column in the right hand drive cars.
It is interesting to see the differences.
