I’ll not say what type of car but it’s rough and rusty no drivetrain, missing a bunch of parts too. He has an insane idea of fixing it up!? Any here’s the rub, he was asking about the chassis numbers (where) I told him that number is not the vin number, which the fender tag will tell that (not there!) then he goes on that there’s no VIN plate either, I went off for him buying that car like that, it has no title and nothing to go by to get one. Totally screwed imo, sell what he has as parts and run! Am I right?

Sadly a parts car or a RACE car...
I’ve been on him to sell it before, buy one that’s almost complete, he’d be money and time ahead. Sadly he can’t change a light bulb, but he’s the last mopar friend I have thats still living (12 years younger)

Tell your friend to get the ownership papers figured out before he spends any more money on it
Then when he figures out himself he can not get the papers for it then hopefully he will be in the mind to find another
Learn from your mistakes is a lesson we all have learned along the way

A car like that you don't want to put any money into because you'll never get it back. A title is a must to show ownership. Then you can start to build on it.

Most states have a way to get a heap inspected and titled, though it will not have an original style VIN. Have your pal check with the DOL.

But yes, it's better to start off with a titled car that is not a rust bucket.

Agree, I CAN work on these cars but this one would really tax me to fix. And have nothing but a big bill when finished.

buy a done ride , sell that wreck to a kid for his first ride . time is short and life needs living . unless he's a great wrench and has tons of talent , with most only dream about . buy one done . here is a duster the guy wants to sell .

Parts car. Get what he can for the parts and get something decent.
Most would be surprised how many parts he’s bought for the car, 361-4 speed complete, new floor pans, trunk pan, dash-cluster, clutch-break pedal assembly, was ready to buy new quarters and nice fenders-hood-doors, bench seats. I never thought to check the car myself, I’m always watching out for him, 63 and not to bright in ways.

Hold on now, all is not lost.
Sounds like you buddy has a good start on a parts stash, Now he has a parts car also.
Now it's time to find that body that does have the title.
