Gusy, this is huge, especially if it establishes precident for the rest of the nation. It's the same thing as Europe's VAT (Value Added Tax) wrapped up in a feel good, eco nazi, titled bill. Thinking about a new Mustang, Camaro, or Challenger ?

URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT

New York Reconsiders Taxing “Gas Guzzlers”

In another misguided attempt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, legislation (A.B. 1318) has been reintroduced in the New York State Assembly to establish a progressive purchase surcharge for some new motor vehicles based on state calculations of carbon emissions. Depending on the vehicle purchased, this surcharge could require owners to pay up to $2,500 more for the vehicle.

Funds collected under the program would be used in part to fund discounts for hybrids and electric cars. If this effort is successful, the effects on your ability to purchase the vehicle of your choice, not to mention vehicle safety, will be dramatic. [You gotta love that; auto mfgs already screwed us with TARP bailouts; now they want to see a tax added to new vehicle purchases, so THEY can receive the revenue to offer up discounts for their eco junkers...Southernman]

We Urge You to Contact the Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee Members (List Below) Immediately To Request Their Opposition to A.B. 1318

A.B 1318 will limit consumer choice in purchasing vehicles by making popular performance and luxury cars, as well as SUVs, light trucks and minivans, substantially more expensive to own.

A.B. 1318 will potentially lead to more deaths on New York’s highways as higher taxes on larger, safer vehicles forces consumers into smaller cars with higher accident fatality rates.

A.B. 1318 will not conserve energy. Greenhouse gas emissions depends on a host of other factors such as total miles traveled.

A.B. 1318 will do little to improve air quality. Air quality has more to do with overall basic vehicle maintenance than it does with owning and operating any particular class of vehicle.

DON’T DELAY! Please contact members of the New York Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their opposition to A.B. 1318.

Please e-mail a copy of your letter to Steve McDonald at [email protected]. Thank you for your assistance. Also, please forward this Alert to your fellow car enthusiasts. Urge them to join the SAN and help defend the hobby! Thank you for your assistance.

Good luck with that. 50 bucks says that out of that list of 25 assemblymen, 23 of 'em have already figured out a way to line their own pockets with this one. The other two just haven't caught on - YET!!!

(did I happen to mention that I have a genuine disdain for politicians?)

Satellite, join the club, and that's exactly why I try to be a thorn in their arses every chance I get. After all, turnabout is fair play.

I do have to ask though (and forgive my ignorance), but what does it take for NY's to get pissed enough to get active ? If we can organize around our hobby, there's no reason we can't do the same with a nearly free membership to an organization like SEMA SAN. They've got attorneys out there that are fighting on behalf of hobbyists and the businesses that support them every day, and they need to increase membership to take the battles up another notch. I'd recommend checking them out and passing the word around. It could save you time and money - and maybe even the hobby we love.

Just a suggestion my friend and thanks for the reply.

No problem.

I agree with you 100% but to answer your question "what does it take for NY's to get pissed enough to get active ?", the short answer is this. I live amongst pussies.

Actually, in comparison to the sheer number of people here in the downstate area, the number of car enthusiasts is sort of small. The rest of the people don't give a F until it hits something that they hold dear. What most people fail to realize is that these sort of laws set precedence, even if in an indirect way. Every little bit of power the Gov can grab is another step toward total control. The problem is that it happens slowly and bounces around from one interest group to the next so no one really notices. If they were to suddenly and completely outlaw ALL model airplanes (just an example) it would be WAY too obvious and THEN you would see action.

The only thing we can do is exactly what you said, fight back at every opportunity and make a complete and total PITA of ourselves. Hopefully, we can wear them out before they get too powerful.

We had a really cool dragstrip right here on LI up until a few years ago. It went belly up (long story and I don't even know all the details) and between the politicians and the wealthy celebrity type Hamptonites that took over Long Island's east end They've done a great job of ensuring that a dragstrip NEVER finds it's way back here again.
