Installing a new carpet kit in my 69 RR and I'm bring to remove the hurst shifter from the tranny so I can lay the carpet before cutting a hole for the shifter.

The 69 repair manual says to use a .010 feeler gauge to release the spring clips....I've tried this multiple times to no avail....any suggestions from someone who has done this before?

Thanks

Spray a penetrating oil in the opening and slide the feeler gauge in and out best you can until it goes all the way in and pull with all your might!

You should first push the shift handle down then insert the feeler gauge to cover the detent pocket in the handle. There is a little tang only on one side that fits in this pocket and that's all that keeps the handle in. If you need new isolators and a stainless retainer those are available from Brewer's.

I always found it easier to just unbolt the shifter from the trans. good time to adjust the shifter linkage.

thanks for the advice guys...still haven't gotten it out, but each day a little more penetrating oil and the feeler gauge seems to go in a little farther.
