I have a 1971 Plymouth Satellite with the factory 318. Looking at a little upgrade. Money is tight, but wife wants the car reliable in case she needs to drive it. I'm an aspiring gearhead and I'd like to do this myself. Looking for advice on what to get. I'm looking for reliability first, performance second at this time. I hope to begin working on a stroker 396 or 402 later this year using another 318. Headers and dual exhaust will follow, but I need this car running ASAP.

I'd appreciate any suggestions. I'm looking at new products if possible.

Thank you

Is there a monthly swap meet near you?

I've had real good luck scoring bolt and run Edelbrock 600 carbs and performer intakes for around $75 a piece.

many years ago I bolted on an Edelbrock performer and a 550 performer carb onto a stock 318 and it ran flawlessly

X2 on the swap meet stuff. Cheaper than flea-bay.

Yeah. No local swap meets. I kinda like the idea of factory warranty too, at least on the carb. I want to ship to ND and pick it up (I'm in Canada) because prices are ridiculous here for the parts themselves and adding shipping is just wrong.

An Edelbrock Performer Intake you can use a spread-bore type carb without an adapter or a 4150 square bore carb with the right gaskets or a mechanical stove type choke too if wanted {or Performer RPM for more power your adding later, square bore/dual plane design}, with a 525cfm - 625cfm Road Demon or Street Demon 625cfm spread-bore style carb {no need for a spead-bore adapter, they will bolt onto a 4150 square bore manifold, I would suggest to stay away from the Edelbrock Perfomer series carbs IMHFO, I'm not a big fan of them at all, some people love & swear by them & I'm not one of those people... A good Holley/Quickfuel670-680cfm Vac. {or Proform}, Vacuum sec. carb with electric choke and for auto-trans for ease & simplicity & a Double Pumper for a manual trans... I'd suggest getting a hooter ignition & coil, along with some ultra-Low Ohm resistance plug-wires, a good gauze type air cleaner element too... By a couple of books on what ever you decide to use, get to know the inner workings of what you have & learn cause & effect of tuning them... I'd run a old rebuilt Carter AFB or AVS or even an old Thermoquad any-day, long before the Edelbrock/Weber Carter clones, they have their place just not in my garage... Not trying to start a "best carburetor debate", that's just my honest opinions, take or leave it...

Ok SO I was Wrong ! There is a Swap meet this Sunday near me. I am going to check it out. How do I identify intakes that would fit my 318?

The most common one is the "Performer 318/360".

I always take pictures of the parts I'm needing to swap meets to make sure all the goes-into's and comes-outta's are in the right place since those tags on items are often wrong. Sometimes a little, sometimes a LOT. :)

Look at the photos I posted they are for a LA-series 273-318-340-360 SBM Wedge here's a couple more Edelbrock Torquer II, Mopar Performance Dual & Single Plane, Weiand Stealth Dual Plane... copy the photos & take them with you if necessary, or bring a Summit or Jegs catalog or something... IMHFO generally at swap meets, most sellers/people will pretty much honestly tell you what things fit, if your not sure, then find some who does know, before you buy.... the SB Mopar will have a notch/recessed area for where the distributor fits, in the back, for example a SB-Chevy manifold looks similar, but will have a hole where the distr. goes, instead of a notch, like the SB Mopars... Good luck, Happy Hunting
