We could never get the timing right on the original 327 in the '66 Corvette. Tried lots of the things that were suggested but no luck. I finally bit the bullet and went to talk to a local shop. He said it would be months before he could look at and suggested finding an old timer through a club. That reminded me of a guy I used to use and was pretty good friends with. He came over and got the timing set pretty close but he thought the original carb wasn't acting right. An original carb for a '66 327 Vette with A.I.R. is around $3600. So he took the carb home with him. He never throws anything away, and he thought he might have the parts that don't come with a rebuild kit. I gave him $50 for a kit and he called yesterday and said it was rebuilt. He put it on and tightened some stuff while I changed the oil and filter.
We started it, and he tinkered with it a bit. And it ran great. First time in 30 years! I said, "Let's go to the bank and get you some money." He asked for fifty and I gave him a hundred. I always overpay him but dang, I should have given him $500.
