I'm 50, so I'm not in the senior crowd yet. We have a huge retired population here, and I drive quite a bit on I-95 and I-295 every day. I see about four or five accidents a week, but what I don't see is many blue hairs out talking to the cops. I see lots of younger folks, and some people in their 30-40s I would guess, but not many seniors. A look at the crash statistics shows why.
The worst drivers in Florida aren't seniors. As one would expect, they are the newbies between 15-19 who have a crash rate of 363.97 per 10,000 licensed drivers. Second place is held by 20-24 year olds with 337.78, and third is 25-29 with 254.91. In fact, you don't get below 200 per until you reach 40-44 year olds with 199.55!
The worst the senior crowd does is 65-69 year olds with a measely 107.2, then it drops below 100 and stays there despite the huge senior population we have. So, what we need is not less seniors on the road, but less 30 year olds and younger on the road.
By the way... that nurse who helped the guy out to his car is more of a threat than the old man was. Accident rates for anyone in their 70s is only about 97 per. If that nurse were in her 40s, she's twice as likely to hit you, and if she's in her 30s she's about three times more likely. ;)
