Guys I've got a question for ya...My '69 Roadrunner has these white plastic clips all along the rocker panel expanding from wheel to wheel. So I'm guessing there was maybe a chrome piece or something here? I've seen it on GTXs but not on Roadrunners. How rare is that option on a Runner because I'm thinking about tearing off the clips and welding the holes shut. Some of the clips are missing so I'd have to find new ones if they are even avalible. Also my hood scoops point outward not up like I've seen most '69s. I don't know too many details about the car so it is possible the hood was exchanged for a different year. I have no build sheet I've already searched so guessimation is my only choice.

Sounds like you have 68 scoops in your hood, or possibly a 68 hood altogether.
Not aware of the lower rocker trim on a RR. Maybe its a Sat. with a RR hood/ & emblems
What are the first 5-6 #'s of the VIN?

Bluethunder is correct. Sounds like you have 68 "lumps" in your hood (68 & 69 runner hoods were the same except for the lumps, and the 68/69 Bee power bulge hoods were the same except the 69 had an extra piece on the front lip)

The pieces along the bottom of your car are for a wide rocker molding. GTXs didn't have this, but it was an option on runners. I would guess your car also has belt moldings (if a hardtop) which run along the top of the doors. You don't see the wide rocker moldings very often on runners. My Hemi car has both the rocker and belt moldings and, assuming I have the chance to restore the car, will retain both when finished

If your hood has cutouts under the scoop inserts it's a 69 hood.

VIN beginning with RM21, 23 or 27 is a RR.

How rare is that option on a Runner?

Of the 69 RR's shipped for sale in the US...

9.2% of the coupes (RM21)
14.3% of the hard tops (RM23)
12.2% of the convertibles (RM27)

had wide sill moldings. It's an option that's not very common on a RR. I'd keep them on the car if possible.

Awesome thanks for all of the responses especially with the statistics. I'll definitely keep it then but I'll have to find the chrome rocker piece since all I have are the plastic clips which will also need replaced. My car is definitely an official RR with vin RM23. I'll have to check about the hood but either way I'll have to get new scoops so I'm not running the '68 ones.

Or a late '68.

I have also heard of this, but have checked many late 68 cars with never having been able to find a orginal example to prove it though. If there is any info or known examples I would like to log them if possible. Thanks.

Meep-Meep is on it. 68 and 69 hoods were different as stated. You CAN bolt 68 inserts in a 69 hood, but CANNOT bolt 69 inserts in a 68 hood as they are solid under the inserts, see last pic. There was also two 68 hoods. The skins were the same but the frame work was different. The red hood is a late 68, gold and bule is early style. Cut off for the early hood seems to be between late Feb. and mid Mar.

rrunner- even though there are not cutouts the inserts for a '69 should still work on a '69 hood right? I don't have the fresh air option anyway so I don't need the holes.

yellow- not the easiest to see, to bad it wasn't a side shot. Does anybody have any idea where you can get the wide sill mouldings? I only have 40 year old crusty clips hanging off my rocker.

No, 69 inserts will not fit in a 68 hood unless you do some cutting. The filler plate fasteners will hold the insert up without the cuts. You wouldn't have to cut the holes as big as the factory did though, but cutting will be needed. I wouldn't cut up a 68 hood myself as they are harder, early hoods seem even harder , to find than a 69 and 69 are now repoped and 68's aren't as far as I know.

Well I think I'm in a predicament then. I need a '69 hood anybody wanna trade...otherwise I'll be hacking up the one I have. I know it's sad to hack up original metal but I gotta work with what I got.

Is it a early or late 68? Any pic's? What's the condition? If you need to use it you could mark the heads of the screws on the inserts for the fillers and most likly get away with just drilling 1/4 to 5/16 holes in the 68 hood where they need to clear. You may want to consider putting it up for sale or swap. I have seen new repo 69 hoods with minor blemishes for $300-$350 at shows.

Um...I'll be honest I have no idea how to tell if it is early or late '68. It does have some surface rust and the webbing is starting to seperate so it needs to be spot welded. I don't think there is much for Mopar support here in Utah. I've never been to a show and seen guys trying to sell stuff. So I might just figure out how to make it work so I don't have to pay any shipping fees.

Look at the pictures I posed above. It shows early and late 68 hoods. The only difference in a late 68 and 69 hood is the cut outs under the inserts. Late 68 hood had the same understructure as a 69, they must have been preparing for the air grabber hoods for 69.

Yep I've got a late style '68 hood were the cutout is elongated so this should make modifying it to fit easier.
