Phil Niekro Won't Be Down For Breakfast

Loved watching him pitch! That damned knuckleball was a killer when he was on!
Rest In Peace!

Watched him play several times in person. He had great longevity because his knuckleball didn't stress his arm like a fastballer. He was a great one. R.I.P.

R.I.P.

don't really remember the guy, offhand or the name
but RIP Phil is in order

a great pitcher is hard to beat
I've never ever really was a real Braves fan
that's when still I actually cared about baseball
(not the rich whinny or selfish arrogant ******* today)
I loved the A's & Dodger's great pitching staffs

I became a big Braves fan in the late '70s/early '80s when a guy who grew up in our church in Omaha broke into the big leagues because he could catch Niekro's knuckle ball. His name is Bruce Benedict, and he had a very solid careeer with the Braves. He always caught when Phil was pitching. Coupled with being able to watch all of their games on the TBS Superstation, I followed them closely all through the '80s and '90s.
R.I.P. to one of the all time greats!!

As kids growing up in Atlanta in the 60's and 70's, we didn't have a lot to cheer about with our Braves.
There was Hammerin' Hank (Aaron) - and there was Phil Niekro.
I remember him and Chief Nock-A-Homa visiting our school annually a few times, along with local weather
legend Guy Sharpe sometimes.
I've still got their autographs somewheres in my old junk box...

I tried as a young pitcher to throw a knuckleball the way you showed us, Phil - but it takes a lot bigger hand
than any of us had as kids.

RIP Knucksie. A really nice local hero to us kids.

he had a brother, Joe, who was also a knuckle baller

Joe Niekro - Wikipedia
Yes, of course.
We in Atlanta did get to witness three of the games' premier knuckleballers (two of which are in the Hall of
Fame now) at one point or the other - Hoyt Wilhelm also pitched for the Braves towards the end of his
career, too.
(Atlanta had a penchant for picking up former greats at the ends of their careers for cheap...)

I think Phil and Joe hold the record for major league wins by a brother tandem.
