I'd ask him if he is sure about no payment. Assuming he says yes. I'd let him know I wanted to pay the other guy, and ask him what the costs are so I can pay forward to his kids education (or future house) fund. I'd then also look into other grandkids. Putting even a small amount, early into a speculative account that can grow, can make a big difference later.

Just had my parents sewer line replaced. Tons of rock. Hired a great contractor. Had to use a quickie saw for rock, where they tied in. 34 feet long, over 8 feet deep. $3400

It's great to see contractors using proper shoring. We still have to many here that think it's only a five minute job why bother.
