What do you guys think about this combo?
I have a stock 383 out of a 68 roadrunner. Right now im in the process of purchasing parts and the only thing I have so far is a edelbrock performer rpm intake. Next I thought about getting the 450 stroker kit from muscle motors, a set of 452 aluminum heads, holley 750 db carb, and TTI 1 7/8 tube headers with 3" collectors, not sure on the camshaft just yet.

Im at a crossroad because muscle motors also sell 400 short blocks that are stroked to 470 c.i and one to 511 c.i for around $3900 and the 450 stroker kit for a 383 is $2100. Are 400 blocks a better option than the 383's when considering a stroker or should i just work with what i have?

This is mainly for a street application

Yes it's all numbers matching. That's another thing. I was thinking of going with the 400 block to preserve the numbers matching motor

I read about guys pulling the numbers matching motor but I'm not sure I would. Stroking it doesn't require any external mods, just maybe some clearancing internally. I guess you could blow the motor apart, but it doesn't take a stroker to do that.

I would pull the 383, install a stroked 400 that is all done matched, balanced etc. save the numbers matching motor! My 2 cents!

X2. I am in the process of doing this exact thing to my 69 RR.

I think that's what I'll end up doing also is pulling the numbers matching motor and get the 400 block. 20141109_134426.jpg

If you want something to go nuts with get a sacrificial motor and keep the numbers motor under the workbench. Then when you simmer down in a few years put the numbers motor back in and cruise.

Good idea because it will be awhile before I settle down haha

I agree with these feller's...........stash away the original motor, build up the 400 you're talking about. From a power standpoint, I'd go with an Aluminum Head with a better chamber design & closed chamber vs. the AL 452. Just my 2 cents.

Nice Bird BTW!

the edelbrock rpm head with angle plugs will be easier to change plugs in and is a little cheaper. you might inquire about the sidewinder heads marsh performance is peddling. a lot of options. i like 470's real well but a 450 may be easier and cheaper. i've always thought a 431 (440 crank in a 383 block) would be fun and easy.

They also sell a 450 stroker kit for the 383 but I keep hearing 431 is the most you should go.

It may be a numbers matching car, but the hood and rim/tires/ride height don't suggest a "numbers matching" car. I would take care of the those items first if you are going to go that route.
