my 1973 dodge charger power steering box has about 6" play and leaks up top by adjuster nut(probably o ring),,, i want to replace it,but i cant swing no firm feel, steer and gear, red head, Borgenson or flaming river prices.... what my next best option? i would prefer to keep my core so i can attempt to rebuild it as a spare ...

Any salvage yards near you ? You are always taking a chance on 50 yr old parts, but you may find a decent one. Also, try posting in the WTB section, as a Member may have one available. You could also order a rebuild kit, and with some guidance, give it a try yourself...

i guess i should have put in my original add.. no one local to me will rebuild it... they are all gungho till i mention mopar and then they wont touch it

The cardone ones are hit or miss from what I’ve read. New paint and that’s about it. The lares rebuild from rock auto, I have read good things about. Keep in mind that nothing for these cars that is good quality will be cheap. This is one of those you get what you pay for scenarios in my opinion.

Its a steering component.. Kind of crucial to your ability to drive. Kinda like buying a parachute made with inferior material because its cheaper... Sure it may or may not work but is crashing worth the risk? 2 items to never go cheap on steering and brakes.. Ya need both.

its not that i want to go cheap i just cant afford the big money boxes.. im just looking for affordable in my budget

Look at the last one I posted.. That's very affordable. I wasn't saying you were cheaping out.. I just meant that cheap parts ain't good and good parts ain't cheap. I too am on a budget and can't sling tons of cash at my car. I do understand.

yeah i hear of people running the A1 cardone, but also they are hit and miss.. i hear Lares is good as well as Napa brand, but the A1 cardone can acutally be bought on carparts.com with core charge for around $135 shipped.
