There have been reports of WWII wrecks/graves being illegally salvaged for the steel.

In some cases all that remains of the wreck is the impression in the mud.

The Chinese don't care. They will do what ever is cheapest. If they can get away with it.

The value of the old steel has dropped significantly. It had gotten high as it was needed for specific science experiments and instruments that needed to avoid the "static" or maybe interference is a better word from the minute radioactivity. In years since they have found other materials.

But yes, asian salvage teams are willing to risk the crews lives on super sketch salvage operations done in secret to get "free" steel.
Asia also has little respect for human life or the dead. We enshrine the Arizona as a memorial and grave. China would have had people killing each other to get to it first so they could cut it up and cash in ASAP. Just as an example.

An old machinist I know got his first job using pre atomic steel. He had bid a job that required it, so he sourced his material through some marine salvage in the SF Bay Area using early 40's and older material off of Naval ships. Since he had that idea for material, he scored big on his first job and took off from there.
