My Air Grabber has stopped working properly

Started opening slower & slower

Now it won’t open all the way on its own

If I bypass everything and attach a vacuum line from the fitting on the intake manifold to the air grabber valve on the hood it opens right up

If I insert the vacuum canister between the vacuum fitting on the intake manifold & the air grabber valve on the hood (still bypassing everything, switch ect.) It won’t open all the way

Do the vacuum canisters go bad?

Can the vacuum canisters be fixed ?

Also can anybody explain how the vacuum canister actually works?

Thanks, all comments would be appreciated

The vacuum canister has a one way valve on the side that connects to the manifold to hold vacuum in the can, if there is a leak you will lose vacuum.
If the solenoid under the dash loses power or becomes stuck open you will also lose vacuum, it's designed to open when you turn the ignition off so the door closes even if the switch is in the on position.
Most likely one of the two but sound like the canister, if you have a vacuum gauge connect it to the port on the canister that goes to firewall other port to engine, run engine and note vac reading, shut engine and can should hold vacuum
