I'm going to look at a 72 Charger this weekend.
The seller claims it's a real Rallye car, but I doubt it.
It does have Rallye doors, but no hood or taillights.
It is a 400-2 car, which I'm pretty sure WAS available in a Rallye.
(Which would eliminate machine gun tips, right?)

I know I'm looking for an "A57" on the fender tag, but...

Let's just say it IS a Rallye car AND happens to be a Lynch Road car...
1st- did they build them there?
2nd- would it still have the A57 code?
3rd, regardless of assembly plant, would all Rallye Chargers have a rear sway bar?

I may be interested even if it's not a real rallye car, just want to be well armed, and value consious.

*Bonus question- It's a big block, and it's a Charger. Is it a muscle car?
*Has buckets and SlapStik, too.
*It's also got high impact paint- EV2 Hemi Orange. How about now?

2nd- would it still have the A57 code? No. LR did not code that. Look at other items on the car. See list below. Ask about the broadcast sheet to confirm A57

Lynch Road plant didn't show A57 on tag as said above, but "sometimes" they did cut 1 or 2 of the codes for the individual Rallye package items, like M08 for simulated door louvers, V21 for performance hood treatment or V22 for delete hood treatment(paint). If the 400 2bbl is factory, E63 will be on tag and would have had single exhaust and no cutouts on rear pan, but would have the rear anti-sway bar.
If it's the red one, I would look over real close. Try to match the original paint if you can. Usually the trunk hinges never get painted and should have original color. See if you can see different colors on the door hinge or up into the fender cavity, around the door panel or door bottom, the lower firewall and bottom side of hood. Try rolling back the weather strip in the trunk and also look in the trunk pocket where the quarter meets the rear light panel. I would go here, print the 9 pages and take with you if you don't have it...

Check the number on the car, to the number on the fender tag. My rallye has front and rear sway bars and that is about all i know. Does the guy have the build sheet?

Thanks for all the info.
Definately learned something.

I don't think this guy is trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes.
I just think he doesn't know, or is going by what the previous owner told him.

I have all the parts to finsh the Rallye package, including hood, hidden headlights, louvered taillights, and valance and tips. I also have that sunroof on my 74 (which is borderline not worth saving).

I don't have any problem putting that stuff on it even if it's not a true Rallye, and if it's not, I would feel "less bad" about possibly grafting that sunroof into it.

According to "mymopar" both 2v and 4v 400 motors in 72 had 8.2:1, so the diff is just carb/intake/cam/exhaust. Needs a 451 anyway, but can run on pump 89/91 as is.

I just hope the body is as solid as is claimed.

You guys is the best :3gears:

Is there a "convert to power windows" thread somewhere?

Can I just change the regulator without removing the glass and tracks?
I doubt theres much internal difference between 72 and 74, eh?

I have two sets of 74 P/W doors and a handfull of extra motors to use.

Update-

Went to see it. Nice paint. No sway bar, no rallye dash. Rallye doors were just stickers. Decent interior.
Was solid around rear wheels except for one little spot, but previous body work was starting to come out behind wheels in lower quarters.

Knocked on door, but no one answered.

Not a bad car, but not a 6K car for me.

Also looked at a 73 Swinger, Top Banana, factory sunroof car (I know), was 225, now some v8.
Never seen a notch back A body with factory s/r.

Owner is in "high end" auction business, and had a #2 1977 Cadillac, and a pretty close to #1 73 Lincoln 460 car, plus a few more, but swore this car had original paint, even though it had repairs starting to come through under back window and in trunk gutter, and was clearly patched on PS quarter. Nor horrible, but he should know better, especially once he realized I knew. Still not out of the question at 3.5K

Went to 3 u-pulls and saw a carvair vert, a 71ish Fury III, and a six cyl 3 spd Javelin, that could possibly be saved. (should have bought the clutch mech, eh?).

Thanks for everyone's help.

A-bodies did come with factory sunroofs, my friends duster had one. To bad about the charger, if you do not mind a little travel, there are several for sale in north georgia and alabama.

I've seen several "sports roof -29 code"" A bodies with sunroofs, but never a "notch back
- 23 code".

I'd love to have a v8, a/c, sunroof, fold down seat car. 4speed a plus, 340 a big plus but not necessary.
I think I've seen less then six like that, including two 360 cars.
...now that I think about it when was the first year post 70 fold down? 73 or 74??

Got a 73 Swinger in the garage right now with a factory moonroof my son is building . Loaded as far as A - bodies go .

I had a 73 and 74 with fold down seats and I think 72's came with fold down rear seats, but I could be wrong there.

Are you looking for a 2 door or 4 door or does not matter?

Never seen a A body with electric defrost either, but I have a 73/74 Charger back glass that has it.

I'm just kind of toying around with buying an under 5K driver right now, as I've been itchin to drive something classic for a while and my projects are quite a ways out.
I'm mostly looking at A bodies but stll want a decent ride and cool options are a plus.
Of course a 3rd gen Charger in better shape is an option as well.
I've got a 74 Duster to look at yet, plus a 66 /6 3spd Cuda, and going to Daytona, but stuff's pricey there.
Also found an 85 Corvette for $3000. Might be fun, but don't relish working on that.
Also not out of the question is that 79 Magnum that was on here a while back.

If you can, get a 89 vette, they are the most sought after of the early C4's and will hold their value better. I bought my 93 wholesale for under $5k.
People right now are asking stupid money for all cars, think there are some people trying to pay bills and think their car is worth what it was 2 years ago.
and they believe the hype the car dealers are saying about how tight the car market is right now, from the earthquake in Japan.

What a turn this thread has taken...

I looked at about a dozen C3 vettes about 2 years ago, and a couple C4s.
The C3 IMO is a FAR sexier body, but the C4 is a MUCH better car (and I fit in the m better).
93 was the big jump in HP, right? I looked at a black 93 manual trans car for $6500.
Also looked at a NICE 87 5 spd raodster for 6K.
Hard to believe that my Coronet is worth more than some of these vettes right now.
Also hard to believe vettes didn't get rack and pinion until 84, and pintos had it in the 70's.

I see a-bodies all around Al, Ga and NC that are in the 2-5k range that seem to be in good shape and a few that people think a-bodies can bring the same price as 68-70 chargers. :confused5:

Only C3 I would want is a 68-70 shark body, now that is a sexy car.

BTW: C4 prices are going up, especially ZR1's, anniversaries, GS's and collector editions.
