On my '66 Coronet 500, I've always had difficulty with the rear windows going up OR down. They have to be helped in both directions. Having not replaced the regulators (or rebuilt), how would I really know what route to go here? I happen to have a pair of regulators I got many years ago for a different Coronet I owned, but sold the car before installation. I did not remove these, they were already out of the car they came from. They look very good overall.

My question is: What wears out on the regulator? I can see if they were not lubed over the life in the car (mine certainly have not been!) where they'd start to act up. Nothing appears to be stripped out on the two I have on a shelf. The ones in the car won't hardly crank the window at all, unless I push down and crank, or pull up and crank. I do have a FSM for the '66. All I can figure is that the rollers flatten out and that then allows the crank gear to grind away and wear down to the point it won't crank. Who sells rollers, if that is indeed the issue?

A couple of things can go wrong. The slides could be so dried up or clogged with hardened grease that there is too much resistance there. Or, the window adjustment could be pressing the glass too hard against the felts.

If you can remove your window and see what the regulators do without the glass you'll be on your way to finding the problem.

I'm going with Photon as the problem, along with maybe dust & dirt getting in the grease and making it even harder to operate. I say take it out and look at it, if dirty shoot it with some oven cleaner and let it do it's job and see what happens, clean plastic rollers separately. Rollers can be had from several Mopar vendors. Good Luck

Cool. I'm going to tear into the quarter windows pretty soon. It's not an urgent thing to attend to, but I do get tired of manually raising and lowering the glass!

Patrick,

I just refurbed the rear rollers on my 69 Coronet. Check out post #208.

As mentioned above over the years the grease turns into a paste. Cleaning the roller tracks, cleaning up the regulator and lubing with WD-40 will make a big difference. You can get roller kits at YO, Classic Industries, Dixie Restoration to name a few. Replacing the rollers makes a difference. Good Luck

Pretty sure the movements are different between 66/67 and 68-70.

66/67 has some oddball back, then down, then rotate, then down some more movement that 68-70 does not. IIRC.

Every 66 or 67 I've ever owned had issues with the back windows.

This time I'm starting with using front window cranks on the rears because the those short rears don't give enough torque.
