All things considered, I favor certain parts of California over any part of Florida (and some parts of Georgia).

Five years registration in arizona for half of one year in california. I got a nice box truck (to move three california households to arizona with) for about half what it was worth, cause the company that owned it couldnt register it in california any more. Arizona registered it without even seeing it, it was still in california.
Insurance rate is about half of california too.
Eventually everything i own will be registered in az, even though i still have two homes in california (for now).

Almost forgot. One of my visits to the arizona dmv..... in the door, conduct business, out the door.......... eight minutes.
Edit. Last time I HAD to go to the dmv in california, I waited an hour and a half in line...... to get in the FRONT DOOR!! Then the LONG wait started... At least inside I had a f-ing chair.

Car or ‘station wagon’ (Tahoe, Explorer, Durango, etc) ~$40/yr.
2500 RAM Diesel - ~$230/yr
Safety Inspection and Emissions annual - ~$60/yr. No emissions for the diesel.
Trailer ~$40/yr plus safety inspection if over 3k LB.
Old Cars - Antique title - $75 one time permanent tag. No inspections required.

We have state DMV's, of course - but we can also just walk into the courthouse annex and walk into
the office there, too.
It's pretty much a "good morning Ed, what do you need?" waiting period.

Having lived in both places that had a lot of it....and for the last quarter century, has a little bit of it...
I can tell you which my preference is.
I actually have grown to take it for granted that we don't have to fool with much of any government
here. A fella gets spoiled....

Yeah, the antique plates although I don’t think the new ones are much / any different. My SF is valued at $500 for excise taxes and so is the Beetle. Sure keeps the yearly hurt down.

I don’t recall all of Illinois prices everything is expensive. Beelman truck service now supposedly has a little slice of property in Indiana and registers all his trucks and trailers there due to excessive fees here. That’s a huge amount of trucks more than several hundred truck and trailer combos. Car trailer tags are a couple hundred bucks give or take my pick ups are the same .. it honestly just keeps getting worse , then the roads suck so bad and instead of fixing them the skim coat with new asphalt and it’s like wash board when done, then if your lucky they will post the rough road sign and call it good. Run away!

I've been telling these morons that for years, esp. the Californians, they DON"T fuckin listen! They just continue to bitch and then point the finger at you for being a troublemaker and a bully for bringing it up, the pussies!!!!

As stated above, if in fact you don't like it where you currently reside, then re-locate. All the whining and complaining is starting to get very old and repetitive. They are absolutely more and more less useful in these discussions. It gets old and quite frankly very boring!!! Just sayin' is all...cr8crshr/Bill
