I just cut most of that plastic tube and 2/3 of the metal tube off of a throttle cable because I need more travel out of it. One way that I might try would be to get a piece of nylon tubing as used for oil pressure gauges and split it open, slip over the cable and coat with superglue. Glue to the cable housing and 'paint' with a magic marker. Cost next to nothing and the hardest part might be getting the nylon to lay flat.
