Item description from the seller
This is the real 1972 Richard Petty Engine.
Nascar Hemi Wedge Engine.
What many people dont know is that similar ruled changes took place regarding the engines being used in competition. The 429 Cubic Inches was the limit through the 1970 season.
But almost nobody knows about the Hemi Wedge engine built by Petty Enterprises for the 1972 season. Restrictor plates were being phased in 1972 to try to keep competition between the manufacturers close AND to slow the cars down for safety reasons.
Maurice Petty was the man in charge of building about 10 of these Hemi Wedge engines that would be used primarily on the super speedways during the 1972 season. These incredibly rare engines were used in the 1972 July Talladega race where nearly every major team equipped with one qualified in the front rows.
Timmy Petty runs the engine room and the machine shop at Petty Enterprises, Timmy is also the main engine technician at Richard Childress Racing. Maurice Petty was also available during the restoration and offered insight and technical input.
During the restoration, Timmy was surprised by some of the modifications and various parts that were used in the creation of the engine. Maurice Petty still had files from the original build period and they provided valuable insight into what made this unique combination actually work on the Super Speedways.
Once rebuilt, the engine would be dyno tested. This would require the building of a custom set of exhaust headers. Timmy contacted a fabricator that routinely does exhaust work for NASCAR teams and had them bend and install the system.
This is the only one of these engines that was raced by Richard Petty and then rebuild by his team once again in 2015. This is the only known of the 10 that exist and run.
(We have all proper documentation and proof of this engine. If you are purchasing the engine the build sheets and information packet will be provided.)
The first race using the 426 Wedge was the Firecracker 400, July 4th., 1971.
Bobby Isaac won in his Charger.
Petty, Baker and Hamilton, all in 426 Wedge powered cars, followed Isaac across the finish line.
