Well all i can say is I've heard this comment before but just coming back from a cruise in Europe, i can assure anyone interested that in fact the most polite well mannered people i came in contact with were from America. i didn't meet any Australians but i know there well mannered as are Canadians. Of course the rudest person i encountered was in Naples who deliberately pushed her childs stroller into me as i guess i was'nt walking fast enough then started to shout in Italian. The kicker was she was African. We had a good laugh over that. I had a good time and enjoyed everything but was very happy to get back home in the USA

Oh I don't know Steve. Just today I had a telemarketer from ?India threaten me with another 9/11 air attack because I played around with hin and his sales pitch to fix my computer.

Funny, I was on an airplane with a Chinese boy here for college and he comnented on how rude New Yorkers were and wanted to know if that was common here in the States. I invited him to my neck of the woods and assured him it was only the big cities. No insult intended to you Steve, that's just what I've heard from many including a friend who's company went there to help after that nasty storm and was shouted at and turned around because they weren't union!

My observation on our last cruise was much different, everybody on the ship was great accept a certain minority from the good ol USA.

Glad you enjoyed it:thumbsup:

I've been to Europe 8 times now. My observation is that there's a percentage of rude people from every country. Some maybe have a little bit more than others. Seems like the majority of the really rude people I encountered in Europe were British, American, or Italian. Like I said though, they come from everywhere.

I'm from Sweden, and I visit drag week last year, and All I have to say is that the American people rock.
Far more nicer and helpful than the European people, but I only visited the small towns around drag week, I bet the ******** all lives in the bigger cities regardless what country you visit:lol:

I've only been to Europe once - to Italy. Some of the rudest people I've ever met. Wouldn't go back again. Hope you had a good time overall and came back rested and ready for work again.

I have never heard of anyone turning away help after Sandy, so I'm suspect about what your friend said and the circumstances. I can say with almost certainty that local line gang crews from utilities were i live will be on the road to help after this present storm. Thats not unusual and happenes often. Not doubting your story, but there is always one asshole in the crowd, your friend must have encountered one. My very good friend worked 9/11 for a long time restoring electrical connections. He is also a union delegate. He and his co workers were literally working day and night and he told me they always welcomed outside help, union or not. Most New Yorkers born and breed here will always help/direct a lost tourist or assist a person in need. Many who live here are foreigners and there culture is not particular open to charity and help as they see so much suffering in there own countries and have yet to adapt to this country. A simple act as holding the door for the person behind you is something they have yet to grasp. The major pushy behavior impolite acts i encountered was on the ship from a certain ethnic group not of this country. The most polite people by far were Americans. New Yorkers, specifically NYC are more in a rush/busy and this is mistaken for rudeness. One thing i can say is my observation is NYC by far is the most policed, security than any city i visited. I stayed one day and night in Barcelona, a very beautiful city. I was warned of theft and to be careful from the get go. I stayed right down the street from the recent bombing. The other countries were nice to visit and of course the Vatican was the highlight of our visit. Im really a home-brewed guy who never ever traveled far, so this trip was a big thing. Setting foot in Naples was something i thought about as it was something like over a 100 years ago when my grandparents left to a better life in America and now i was the first blood relative to visit. Ive been told Naples is a tough town and it looks it. It wasn't without drama as in the airport a older couple in front of us, the wife passed out. Her husband started yelling and she slowly crumbled down, my wife tried to grab her first but i got her, eased her to the ground so she wouldn't hit her head. The para medics ( this was in Spain) were there in seconds and they were very good. She came around and was ok. My little granddaughter witnessed all this and got so upset she started to get nauseous. Funny story was we were in the square in Vatican and this woman who was a beggar came up to my daughter. The woman was about 5 foot all hunched over and dressed in black. She looked like a character out of a Disney movie. My little g daughter took one look at her and went hysterical crying. Talking to a tour guide i found out that these beggars are often more of a hustle as in a act. Anyway there is no place like home and I'm glad to be back and working on the 69

I spent a month in Italy this past June and I agree with Steve on this, I even went as far as to ask a couple of Italian people I know about people's demeanors and attitudes. I received various responses. If in northern Italy the locals have a distain for the Germans, Dutch and French. Evidently those countries are the "bullies" of Europe and the Italians don't like it. But they also understand that their country is in a financial crisis and the rich countries have the say so, socialism at its best.
I personally saw how the Germans and Dutch were pushy and somewhat rude. I saw the same thing as Steve, some of these migrants acted as if the world was owed to them. Italians are cracking down and booting them out, they dont want to assimilate with local cultures and have really become a burden on the local welfare system. Again another reason why Italians dont care for Germans.
American for the most part are respected which is nice to hear, so hopefully we keep on improving this.
I also have family in France and Austria and when I go visit there, I've seen rude Italians rare occasion Americans. It depends, biggest thing I tell people who want to travel, learn your host countries customs and cultures, if you put forth a teeny bit of effort, they will 98% of the time really try to help you. But if you have a bull in a china shop mentality and think you are all that and a bag of chips, then I say just stay home, otherwise you'll get treated like **** and rightly so.

Honestly I can think of a good reason to be rude on purpose. More friends the merry. 1 enemy is to many.

Glad you "got-away" SFSI
Welcome home
I was back in NY for Hurricane Sandy and 2 years ago to help a buddy run his auto shop whe he was in hospital. Now I know why I left. Its not the people its the traffic and being crammed together with no room to breath. Best food in the world though. Both my Brothers were here 2 weeks ago and were amazed at cruising around with NO cars on the road.

You wanna see rude?? Have you been to an Apple Store lately? Oh wait a minute, that was probably just me...
