That sounds a touch too small for all 4 corners.
Price was on object on my 69 GTO.
Saved a pair of 15x7 Rallys from the junkyard but kept 14x6 up front.
225/70/14s, 275/60/15s
big bumps and a full car can bottom the rear on these.
the offset is a little too much. it hurst handling in a coil spring rear worse than a leaf spring rear in my opinion.
would go to 215 or 225/70/15s if had the extra cash and another pair of 15s
Mom, who brought me home from the hospital in a 68 442 and took me to my first day of school in a 69 Daytona is getting some time behind the wheel.
on a 71 Javelin that originally had all 14x6 rallys I rescued four 15x7s and went with 215/65/15s and 255/60/15s. the offset is better. it is slightly less than the GTO and in a unibody, leafspring car handles great.
Now, closer to what you are looking at. is my 74 RR.
I got some 15x8 rear Wheel Vintiques. I could not find any inexpensive 15x7 Rallys locally. (not happy as one would not hold air new, had send back. And their powder coat must be painted over, they make them at a fair price and not a lot of other repro Rally options in this size).
again 275/15/60s on the rear. did not buy 15s for the front, painted some 14x6 and went 225/70/14 again.
no problem with that size on the rear. I THINK you could go a touch bigger there. I THINK you could go a touch bigger on the front.
If you do not want to offset and they fit, 225/70/15 might be a good choice all around. For performance, no offset, sticking with 15 inch RWL it would be awesome if 245 or 255 60/15s fit all the way around. These 73/74s have HUGE wheel wells.
BFG has by far the best 14 and 15 inch RWL tire selection. You are only going to get a little above average passenger car quality tires in RWL 14/15 inchers. True performance road tires do not come in these sizes. Although BFG has the best size selection, I prefer INDY 500 and Cooper Cobras that I think are a slightly better tires. Others may feel the opposite.
I would have tried the MT Sportsman STs on the RR but did not have all 15 inch rims. They cost a little more and I was hoping they would be a little better tire.
All the above is just opinion. I rolled for lots of miles on ancient but not worn out Dunlop Qualifiers on the GTO for a long time.
I think tires under 26 inches are too short for these cars in terms of clearance, performance, and RPMs (yep, no OD trannies for me). But to get bigger in 14 inch you have to go to at least 215/70s, and 225/70 which I think are as wide as you should go and pushing it on 6 inch rims. (I know plenty have rolled on 235 and 245 60s on 6 inchers, I just think it's too much)
For typical 15x7 Rallys, I also feel 275/60s are maxed for what you should put on them, and that is as far as you should go for the rear.
If you are going to stick with RWL, my recc is go 15 all the way around. Purely from a riding performance, handling, and rotation reason. (I stretch my car dollars wide over all my rolling projects pictured above- the end result is not what I would prefer to do to any single car- i.e.- still keeping my 14s up front on some cars)
If you go with 15 all the way around, I would ping everyone with your same year and model and hit the guys that work in tires shop over what the biggest you can go in front is with no rubs or issues, and not offset and go the same all around.
If it is the old school rake look, then offset.
If you decide not to go RWL,
get the same info on 17 inch, which opens you up to to some sizing and performance options. (it also opens up your wallet)
Although, to be honest, unless you are going to be doing some serious autocross or such driving- I don't think you will be getting any performance/handling advantage that you can appreciate or notice.
