The aluminum timing chain cover leaked coolant from corrosion after only 58 years .
The gasket kit came with a felt seal . Does this get used on a ‘66 Polyhead 318 ? There want one when I removed the cover . Thank you

If your vibration damper (harmonic balancer) has the shield on the rear, like the one in the following image, the felt ring fits inside it. If it does not have the shield, it is not used.

The felt ring captures seepage that may get past the main seal.
