I picked up a supposedly rebuilt big block 727 this weekend. I would definitely say its been gone through though as it has new gaskets and seals everywhere but I haven't verified in great detail yet.

It's a bit of a Franken-build. It's a truck/van case, tail housing was changed to a car, and interestingly, appears to have a 904 valve body. Is there any difference between the small and big block valve bodies? It does not appear to be for a lockup torque converter thankfully. May or may not have a shift kit in it. It's hard to tell other than smoe blue springs. This trans has never had oil in it from when whoever went through it.

Just wondering specifically what this small block valve body is going to do and if I should change it out now?

There are 10 bolts that hold the the valve body to the transmission case. One of the bolt holes is elongated. On the 727, the valve body bolt favours one end of this slotted hole, while on the 904, it favours the the other. The sheet metal separator plate between the two valve body halves will have a round bolt hole that favours one end or other of the slotted hole, depending on the style of transmission it was assembled with. Elongating this round hole with a Dremel tool to match the valve body channel plate oval hole will allow it to bolt to either a 727 or 904. Each valve body has its own specific length of park actuator rod, so this will have to be changed as well.
