The starter wouldn't work on my GTX this morning so I jumped the relay and it fired right up. Thought I might as well investigate the issue before buying a new cheapo relay. Took the old one off and opened her up to see the issue.

If you take the battery bolt loose the stationary contact will come out.

You can check if the relay is working by connecting 12v to the small terminals BAT & IGN to see if the relay is opening and closing.

What you're going to find if the relay is working are burnt contact points

A little touch up with a point file and they are good as new.

I took the removable contact to the wire wheel and polished the rust off the area where the battery bolt contacts for good contact. Put it all back together like this and reinstall.

Don't know if this is original as it says 2444442 & 12V on the mounting tab. But the GTX fired right up after installation, with no evidence of maintenance. Another part repaired without having to buy some chineseium junk.

This is completely awesome. Thank you for taking the time to illustrate and explain what the problem was and the repair steps.

How many are just tossed away!

I probably have 10 or more in a drawer.

I recently had a different issue with a starter relay. The contacts on a start up became stuck closed. This caused the starter to stay engaged with the engine running, back driving the starter motor. Made a horrible noise. Luckily, it happened while still in the garage. Never experiencing this before, I quickly popped the hood and disconnected the battery. Took the relay apart and saw evidence of contacts arced and "welded" together. Had a spare so replaced it.. So all good now.

If this happens it could be loose connection. Wiggle the wires and bulkhead connections and try the key again. It's free and takes a minute to try.
