I have 1970 Plymouth Belvedere. It used to be a Slant6 car with manual 3speed on the column and without power steering. I am planning to swap a 383 with 727tf in it, so i changed a k-member to a bib block k-member that came assembled with power steering box. And in turned out that steering column is to long now. Were they different for non power steering cars? What is the right way to find proper steering column for my project?
Thanks in advance.

Yes the manual columns are longer, and power steering columns are shorter. Sounds like you have a power steering gearbox and are trying to use your manual steering column.
You guessed it,...it wont work. I recommend advertising on the WTB section for a 70 power steering column for B body. Remember the shifter location too. Are you planning on a column shift automatic ? or a floor shift column? good luck to you, You should find one.

Yes the manual steering shaft is longer. You will need to find the PS shaft or a complete column for a 70. I do not know what the cut off date would be,maybe as late as 1978.Though not correct and it would be up to you,you can collapse the column (shaft)you have now as it has plastic shear pins 2 piece shaft and will collapse enough. THAT IS UP TO YOU.

X2 on what Darter said - lots of folks disassemble the inner shaft and collapse it. You can re-drill the 3/16' holes and insert nylon rod. If everything else is in good shape, the bearings and bushings hold the shaft with no problem, so the re drilling isn't always necessary.
