Steering Column Question

I have converted my car to a 5 speed and am in the process of cleaning up my steering column. There is an inner shell that the old column linkage used to attach too and I was curious to know if I could get rid of it. I cut off the arm that attaches to it but if I dont need it I would rather leave it off. Here is a picture of the part in referencing.
