I bought a rebuild kit. Used plenty of grease and reassembled. Body slides up and down just fine but i notice about a quarter of a inch play. In other words when i grab the shaft and grab the coupler with the other hand there is play. It seems like 3/16 to a 1/4. Is the coupler body worn?

no, you got the shoes installed wrong inside...they are 90 degrees off

Two ways to assemble

Don't take this wrong, but are you sure you assembled it correctly? I have done several of these and the shoes can be installed wrong. I have attached a shot from the '70 assembly manual I have.

Hope this helps!

The shoes have the tapered side toward the body, flat part against shaft and are in there slots. How can they be 90d off?

Fixed and thank you

double check that...I thought the curved part of the shoe went towards the shaft, and the flat part of shoe went to the body of coupler..I'm trying to find my diagram now

found it, yer right, curved part of shoe goes towards outside...but they can be installed 90* off, that will cause slop
