whats the best method for keeping rodents from crawling in the engine compartment or anywhere else while storing a car outside?

that would be nice. But I have a car out in the open, so I want to make sure no rodents make a home in my car.

Fresh Cab from farm supply stores is what i use works well

Outside , Thats tuff , Your not going to keep them out of the engine bay. Bait bars ect help but mice will still cause damage.
Stuff steel wool in both tail pipes, Make sure fresh air vents are shut , pull visors to the down position, If you have any rust holes, floor pans , qts. ect use steel wool or some body steel to cover and screw down.
Myself if the car was decent I would as least pull the wiring out of the engine compartment. Oh and steel wool in the air cleaner intake.
Good luck.

Maybe sticky traps around each wheel. Get them before the climb up in.

Seen a vette in a garage sitting on 4 disc blades , each on a cinder block, each tire sitting in the dish.
Guy claimed mice could not navigate the bottom side of the disc to get to the tire.
Claimed success with that set up.
I didn't tell him , I have seen the little critters jump out of a 30 gal trash can.

#1, seal off the cowl vent slots in front of the windshield or they'll crawl down and into your heater box and vent stacks. Make sure all the body plugs are in the car, especially the lower inner quarter/truck extension plug on each side just behind the wheel opening. Electrical tape or similar across the window felt gap between the door glass and the quarter window glass. Mice will walk around the side of the car and crawl down that gap into the door gap and actually get in the car.

Make sure you have an air filter in place so they can't crawl down your carb and if you don't want to find **** and acorns in your air cleaner assembly cap the intake snorkels and heat stove pipes. Spray can lids or similar to cork the exhaust outlets.

I've read you can use moth balls around the car to prevent them going up inside.

I have heard people say that also about moth balls, only thing is they are very small and it takes a lot of moths to collect enough.

Joking aside, around the outside can't hurt. But do not put them in the car, the smell will be there for a long time.

I wouldn't put them inside the the car. But outside yes. I think peppermint is also a good deterent.

If the car is stored on dirt/shale and the like. What we used to use around the fish houses to keep the rodents away was to pour lime around the bait sheds. The lime would burn their feet and they would not cross. If you have farms in your area you should be able to buy the stuff in bulk. Spread about a one foot circle around the car. It will burn/kill grass also. So use it at your own risk. And use common sense. Just simple agricultural lime.
How about the fabric softener trick for the interior and the trunk areas. I shove a few in the vent boxes for added protection. Mice like to hang out in there.

some of my fleet trucks sit as spares so what i do is get dryer sheets and put them in the car interior in the trunk and in the engine compartment they will never try to get in. and the car smells great.

I use dryer sheets and I put snap traps baited with peanut butter. It helps but those little bastards are relentless. Also if the car is running I will start it once in a while and take it for a drive.

When parking my camper outside for long periods I would do the dryer sheets inside and under the hood .Mothballs spread under the camper.Mothballs dissolve in about a month in a dry climate, little less in wet areas.
I have heard about Irish Spring soap shaved and put in a vented container also.
