surges when warm

I have a all new motor with a 6 pack and new holly carbs. I will surge going down the road at around 70.
Wants to stall out when coming to a stop. Have a new coil, fuel pump. What I'm I missing? It's a 75 440.
 
Most likely a fuel air mixture issue...also could be timing..check your vaccum advance (if you have it) and adjust your carbs. Surging can be one of two things that I know of either fuel air mix is wrong or it is timing. when it comes to timing it could be the advance is not set right or the timing chain is slack and needs to be replaced..hope that helps. :)

My car would do the same. Too much timing or the carb flooding while running. Check your float levels and make sure the fuel pump isn't doing over 7 PSI.

I put in a regulator and it fixed my surging/stalling problems.
 
It's a new carter fuel pump from summit. Not sure on the psi.

Do you have a vacuum gauge? I recommend adjusting your idle and mix screws on the carbs...I would bet a buffalo nickle its the fuel air mix. being a new setup fresh engine it has to be that.

10 seems a bit low. Try moving it up and see where it goes from there. Might fix the idle stalling.

Surging is fuel, so check floats, idle mixture, and find out the PSI you might need a regulator. Rule them out in that order. A vacuum gauge will help with the diagnosis.

I'll try that. what is a good timing for it if 10 is a little low.
 
it's too lean. overly rich will create flat spots. incorrect idle a/f ratio will create stalling at a stop along with a low fuel level in the end carb float bowls. timing is only relevant to camshaft.
 
to everyone that gave me an answer thanks. But the real problem was my tank had an old red shop rag in it from who knows where.
Goes to show you that when al else fails look in your gas tank......

well, we said it was lean,....lol!

well it was not the old red rag that caused the problem. It just does not want to run any more.
Up for sale nice 62 Dodge 440 with all new motor and parts. Will trade for something that keeps running.....
