How do you determine compression ratio?

I go to one of those fancy smanshy compression ratio calculators that you can find on the interwebz (linky)

Swept volume + unswept volume divided by unswept volume. Swept volume is simply the volume occupied by the piston (bore and stroke). Unswept volume is the chamber, which includes everything above the piston at TDC - gasket volume, dome or dish volume, etc..

So an 800 CC cylinder plus a 100 cc chamber is 900 cc's total. 900 / 100 = 9.0:1. Remember to keep the units the same!
