Took the 63 Polara Max Wedge for a ride!

Well a friend and I took the Max Wedge for a ride today. Definitely almost not for the street. With no shroud and a four blade fixed fan it is not conducive to stopping in traffic. It does not like to idle very long, but when the pedal goes down, WOW! I think I will stick to driving the other cars and leave this one for the trailer or a show not more than a few miles away.

Is that a heat shield under the master cyl?If not you will need one,mine got so hot you could fry a egg on it.Lots a underhood heat with the MW manifolds.

Not in that photo but we fabbed one up yesterday just for that purpose...we'll see how it works

Rather than start a new thread, I will stick with taking the Max Wedge for the first ride. Stick with me guys as I am just a dumb Chevy guy that bought his first MOPAR. Two questions. I am used to the TH400 in Chevy solid lifter engines shifting very hard in drive under WOT. It will break the tires loose in a 1-2 shift. The heavy duty 727 push button in the Max Wedge shifted at the higher RPM at WOT in "D", but was not as abrupt as a TH400. Sound normal, or should it be hard also?
Second issue. All of us in the car are old enough to drive cars in the day with drum brakes. The Max Wedge has brand new brakes, good pedal but very bad stopping. The car has less than 300 miles on it in 12 years. I am wondering if pads need sanding or just used several times to fix the problem. Your thoughts?
 
Double check to make sure the brake shoes are not installed backwards, it is a more common thing than you might think.
 
Takes me back to the mid 80's when I had a Max Wedge in my 68 Road Runner. Yeah, not the correct platform for it but I was happy to trade my 383 for it straight across so in it went. No, I didn't cut the hood. I just left it off.

Well we went for another ride. Holy Wedgie Batman! The car just needed driven. The brakes must of had a film because they now work fine, the posi clutches no longer chatter, and it broke the tires loose on the 1-2 shift. Only trouble is it drinks 110 leaded Cam II like there is a hole in the tank!
 
The only issue I forgot to mention is I have to fix a leaking valve cover on the passenger side. Yeah the real tight one. I have been told that using a thin walled socket with a swivel, I will be able to get to the nuts near the exhaust manifold. The person that told me that said the valve cover can be removed and reinstalled without removing anything else. Sure doesn't look that way! Since I don't see very well, I am going to see if I can get someone to come to the house and do it.
 
I'd offer to help (I'd love to work on an orignal maxie!) but....

Just want to make sure before I jump into this. Where is the oil sending unit located on a max wedge? I assume it is a general Mopar location? Just by chance if it is located on the side of the block where the leak is, I want to make sure it is secure. Told you I know Chevy's not Mopar's. Thanks
 
The oil pressure sender is at the very back of the engine where you might find a distributor on a Chevy! :icon_thumright:
It's right on the back of the block, on the top right by your firewall.
