need suggestions on what torque converter to use with 400 big block. car is 65 coronet... the motor is 30 over with 9 to 1 pistons, m1 dual plane intake, 3.23 gear in rear...480 purple cam. want a good cruiser on highway. factory air and power steering car...i want it comfortable for wife to drive...never had auto mopar before...my other car is 69 super bee with 5 speed...thanks for any help

I used these guys for my 400 stroked to 512. Very good to talk to. Cheaper than some other places and hand build when you order. Came in quickly and fit nice and runs very good. I definitely would use these guys every time I needed a converter.

Hey man, the right converter will make the car much more fun to drive. I struggled with a loose converter in my Charger for years because the "experts" kept saying that I needed a higher stall. I called Lenny Crouteau at Ultimate Converter Concepts and got a fantastic 11" setup that made all the difference.

Definitely what kern dog said. The experts wanted a higher stall too! The folks from revmax strongly suggested a much lower stall that what originally thought. Any shop that listens and steers you in the right direction is a good one, obviously!

What Kerndog says is good advice. I was on the fence on low or high stall. Lucky me I was at Summit in Reno and scored a Hughes 11in off the bargain shelf. This is a low stall mileage unit made for motorhomes. Rated stall is something like 1500 but in my rig it is more like 1800 to 2000. It mated well with the Comp XE268-10 cam in the 440. After all this is a street not strip car.

Where are you at on L.I.? Next time I go back home I would like to see your ride if OK.
I'm in Great Neck, garage is in Carl place both in Nassau. You come that far,,,,you earned a ride!! Jericho Tnpk is 3 lanes of old china rock concrete,,,,,,LOL

Where was "home"?

Floral Park, family is still there. I worked at 120 Jericho just east of Little Neck Pky the old Nicks Gulf station now Morans. I was there in 2015 for 2 months helping my buddy in Westbury at Wheatley Hills Auto Service. Small World Eh... Sure dont miss the SNOW and freezing cold though.

I just bought a PTC converter last month it's suppose to come this week. They took all my details and told me the rpm stall (2900-3000) which is exactly what I was wanting. i called some of the other guys and they said I needed a higher stall or were more expensive. Mine cost 475 iirc they haven't charged me yet. I also think you can send it back at least once if you don't like where it stalls for free.

I had a '67 coronet with the original 383 four barrel and the stock converter(11-3/4"). It was a real dog. I picked up a locked up HP383 out of a 69 Road Runner with the original 10-3/4" converter on it(Some say it was a factory high stall). Had the vert rebuilt and installed it on my Coronet. made all the difference in the world on my 383. Put that same converter behind a stock 440 that I installed in the same car and it was too loose. As stated above. get some professional advice and do it right the first time.
