Building a 512 and need a torque plate. 4.375", Buy, rent, borrow? Central, Ohio.
I had actually considered something similar. we're only trying to simulate the distortion in the cyls when the heads are bolted on. I'm not too sure that the B engine really needs plates. I do know that the 426 Hemi needs 'em. It's that top- inside bolt that is tricky and the way you torque them. You can laugh, but it works ...
You buy a couple feet of heavy wall DOM tubing with the correct diameter hole for the head bolts. You cut them to lengths that match the head thicknesses under each bolt. If you have access to a lathe you can square the ends so they sit flat. You torque these in place and they will do exactly what a torque plate will accomplish.
Ch-ching $$$$$$
You're gonna buy one of those you better be doing a BUNCH of blocks !!
Yep, I'm gonna buy a plate and do it the right way. Sent my block to a hot tank as I do not like the result of thermal cleaning. My 400 was really, really, stuck. I had to cut 4 rods and melt a section of the top of one piston to take it apart.Cost is in direct relationship to the level of precision you expect. Just doing one correctly is worth the cost.
