A capsize within the previous hour has seen the American entry skippered by ex Team New Zealand skipper, go under after a dramatic launch out of the water.

But how's his dyno numbers?

Those boats can get up to speeds of 65mph (over 100km/h) ....and I have heard some crazy horsepower numbers. :D

From the latest news article here -

The boated helmed by New Zealander Dean Barker capsized just after they rounded the final mark in their race against Italian entry Luna Rossa on Sunday.

Patriot was on foils and flying when the crew lost control and the AC75 went over.

The boat could not be righted quickly. All 11 crew appeared to be accounted for as chase boats moved in to assist.

American Magic held a narrow six second lead at the end of the first leg, extending that to 42 seconds after four legs.

At the top gate for the last time, the breeze had gone so far left that the left hand mark was the only choice.

The America's Cup website reported that resulted in a very difficult manoeuvre, especially with a squall sweeping across the course.

Patriot made it through the tack, but as they came out the leeward running backstay was not released, preventing the mainsail from being eased.

With sail pinned in and the gust now on them, American Magic's bow reared up and a capsize was inevitable.

The Americans were forced out of the race that they were leading, giving Luna Rossa their first win of the day.

American Magic had been struggling in this regatta and had lost three previous races - to leave them at the bottom of the standings.

Racing took place on the northernmost race course, course A, for the first time in the regatta as winds reached nearer the top end of the wind range which spans from 6.5 knots to 21 knots.

Despite the damage, the boat is still above the water.

After the year that we just endured, I find it VERY difficult to care about a millionaires sport. Sorry @kiwigtx

Millonaires sport...
well...they ALL are millionaires now aren't they?
I mean:
Albert Puljos from St. Louis Cardinals signed a 10 year / $ 30 million yearly contract to play for the Angels 9 years ago...
That my friend is money
AND, the guys who "Sail" the vessel dont make much at all....

Yeah but Pujols said it wasnt about the money.

Boy did the Angels get the short end of the stick on that deal. Pujols was finished once they took steroids out of baseball.
I actually dated a woman before I was married and her Dad was into racing sail boats. While we were together, he raced down to the Caribbean and back to the states. The "boat" was all wood and gorgeous. Of course, he had more money than he could ever spend.

YIKES!! waiting to watch the races later today. They've been having problems with the rudder...looks like they did again. Guessing the rudder and its foils both stalled.

Good news today - Team America and their boat "Patriot" are back on the water ready to resume racing...

Patriot has undergone a major rebuild after the capsize which left it with a large hole in its side with the syndicate also having to replace much of the electrical gear.

It sat in a cradle in front of the team's boat shed for inspection before being lifted by a crane into the water just after 11am.

Both American Magic and Italy's Luna Rossa have to declare to America's Cup official which hull, foils, rudder and mast tube they will use in this weekend's Challenger Series semi finals.

The best of seven series is due to start on Friday with two races, followed by two more on Saturday and Sunday and then one on Tuesday if needed.

The winner will then race against Team UK to decide who will advance to challenger Team New Zealand for the America's Cup.

American Magic paid tribute to the other syndicates for their help in getting Patriot back on the water.
Patriot was slowly lowered into the water at the team's Auckland base and was expected to sail later in the day to begin systems checks — the first step to a full return to racing.

On its relaunch, Patriot had a new emblem over the area of the bow which had been holed — crossed band aids bearing the Italian, British and New Zealand flags and the message: “thankyou."

The 75-foot yacht has to pass inspection by the Cup measurement committee late Wednesday in order to race against Italian challenger Luna Rossa in the best-of-seven race challenger series semifinals which begin Friday.

The winner of the series will progress to the Prada Cup final where it will meet Britian’s INEOS Team UK. The loser will be out of the regatta.

American Magic’s shore team, assisted by boat builders from America’s Cup-holder Team New Zealand, have been working around the clock since the capsize occurred to repair extensive damage, including a big hole at the bow.

The U.S. yacht sustained internal and external damage and its complex electronic systems have had to be replaced. Patriot’s hydraulics are sealed and avoided the worst of the damage.

The achievement of American Magic in repairing Patriot on such a tight deadline has amazed rival teams and sailing experts. Patriot came close to sinking and was only saved by the swift response of the U.S. team and rivals who rushed to its assistance.

Ben Ainslie, skipper of the British team, wrote in a weekly newspaper column that he doubted his team could have overcome such a setback.

“I asked one of our senior engineers whether we would have been able to make it back for the semifinals had the same thing happened to us and he said ‘no chance,’" Ainslie said.

American Magic mainsail trimmer Paul Goodison told New Zealand media organization NZME the U.S. team hopes to “carry on where we left off” as Patriot is re-launched.

“We’re reassured by (designer) Silvio (Arrivabene) and the guys that the boat will be in a similar state,” Goodison said.

They showed that tumble on the new this morning. The shape of these boats have gotten totally weird over the years. Not sure how many millionaires live on these purposely built racing machines called yacht's.

The 'millionaires' sit back on their Super yachts, while the hired help race these thoroughbreds of the ocean.

Wow, that's a class act from Team America. It's great to see such sportsmanship in this highly competitive era we live in.

You mean like NHRA top fuel and prostock since the 90's?
:(

I would definitely own a top fuel car if you could still build one out of a garage as a hobby and be competitive. Now you need millions of dollars and big name sponsors...

I have been a sailor all my life and raced on, pretty much, anything that floats from 1 man dinghies to offshore sleds. What has been going on for the past couple of cycles of the AC is getting too far away from "sailing". There is no more seamanship involved. The skill of the sailors to manage tacks, jibes, spinnaker sets and douses and true match racing tactics have all been removed. There is no doubt that these boat are absolutely amazing....doing 40+ knots is 10 knots of breeze is incredible and would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. However, now there is a skipper, tactician, and trimmer. The others on the boat are there just to provide the man power to pump up the hydraulics that operate all the systems.

There are a lot of rules nuances is sailing that make it difficult for the lay-person to follow, but here is what I miss most about watching AC races....the pre-start dueling:
