What am I missing on this door handle linkage?

I took a picture when I was cleaning the inside of my door on a 69 Charger. I found this chicken wire installed by the PO. What goes there? Does anybody have a clear picture what I’m missing? Thanks.

I think it needs a clip similar to the one on the bottom of the rod.
