Are there any 15" mopar rims that the older style DD hub caps will fit on? Just plain rims, no cop wheels.

mid 60's dodge pick-up truck. they won't fit disc brakes and the set i found are only 5 1/2" wide.

Red...

I had a set made by a guy in the Northwest. He takes an existing center and weld a 15" hoop onto it. Any backspace you desire and powder coated @ ~$100/wheel + shipping.

PM me if you'd like his contact info

I think one of the guys in our club mentioned a guy around Buffalo that does the same thing, I will have to do some checking.

Hmmm.... that's got me thinking :eusa_eh:

I just agreed with a guy over here in the UK to buy his 2x 15x5.5 & 2x 15x6 early 60s steels for our 63 Polara 500. Havent paid yet but was going to in the next day or 2.

We have an SSBC front disc conversion, but we chose them instead of MP Brakes at the time cos SSBC said they fit with 14" wheels (we still use our original steels with full wheel covers) whereas MP said you need 15" wheels to clear their calipers.

I presume from that, the early 60's pick-up steels should clear these calipers, if our original 14's fit ok?

Anyone know if that sounds correct? I dont want to go spending loads on these wheels if theyre not going to fit

Easiest thing would be to try them first but we were going to get someone to paint them for us before we get them.... sounds like a bit of a flaw in the plan, now I come to think of it :eusa_think:

the mid '60's pick-up 15" wheels won't work with disc brakes. i've got a set of the wheels and know they won't clear the calipers unless you use some spacers. here is a pic of what i did to put early small hubcaps on later wheels.

I like that fix to fit the larger caps :icon_thumleft:

I will try one of the older wheels over our calipers tho, just to be sure. Our larger caps fit ok on our original 14" wheels, which fit ok over the calipers, so it MAY follow that the 15s fit too, if that area of the wheel is the same :eusa_think:

I'll let you know how we get on...

Did you mean the larger hub caps on the later rims?

i have an original 14" that will fit over the calipers, but the 15" wheels won't. i'm using a-body discs/calipers.

Thats a great idea for putting those caps on, how many of those tabs do you need to weld on and at what location? what size are those tabs? ?x? thanks John

Just a bit of an update on the disc-brake will-it-or-wont-it-fit conundrum :D

Well I arranged to have one of the 15x5.5 wheels delivered so we fit could trial fit it over our SSBC caliper & disc. After a bit of a nervy minute or two, thinking it wasnt seated very well, we nipped up the wheel nuts and found that it was seated ok on the hub. The centre hole is a bit larger than the SSBC hub, which isnt ideal, but the tapered/chamfered nuts located the wheel sufficiently on the studs for that not too much of a concern.

To be sure it wasnt touching the caliper we put a few blobs of blu-tack on the extremities of the caliper and refitted the wheel. After removing the wheel again there was no evidence of the blu-tack being disturbed by the wheel so we were happy that it wasnt touching. We reckon there's at least 1/4" clearance all round.

Prior to trying the wheel on, I asked around a couple of people I thought might have already tried these wheels with disc brakes an one friend overe here said he had no problem fitting them on his 65 Belvedere that had Challenger front discs, and Mr Mosher himself :notworthy: said they have fitted a 15x4.4 wheel to SSBC brakes but have had to take the grinder to the caliper to give enough clearance. he thought the 5.5 would be ok hough. And he was right :icon_thumleft:

So, lewtot184, thanks for the warning; I'm glad we tried before buying the wheels, but thankfully there does seem to be some disc brakes that these early steels fit :icon_wink:
