Would a 69 Charger with hemi engine originally have a hood insulation pad?

I see photos of with and without. My car is not originally a Hemi car but has one now and the air cleaner is rubbing on the hood pad.

That lead me to wonder if they would have originally had a hood pad or not.

Thanks!

Jim, the insulation option for these cars consisted of full undercoating of the underside of the car plus the hood pad. So the Hemi equipped cars could be equipped with this option.

Are you using the molded style hood pad from REM or Repops? The reason that I ask is that there are some pads out there that are cut in the correct outer profile, but are thicker and not molded to the contours of the hood.

Without looking at a cross section of survivor cars with that option, it is hard to say if some did not touch. But I know on my car, it did not show any signs of touching.

I agree with the problems with today's pads. They are so thick as to make it hard to use the metal clips in some spots. So the seem to hang down a bit due to contour and thickness. I see lots of restored cars with scuffed pie tins on 440's. I also had a hemi that had a hood pad with the same problem, the air cleaner getting scuffed. I solved by taking the pad and stripping away a bit of the layer that faced the hood, making it thinner. Seemed to work, though a little sloppy looking, not sure how it lasted over the long haul as I sold the car.

Kowal is correct in that the aftermarket hood pads that are cut to the profile are no where near correct. They are a fraction of the cost of the molded style reproduction pads, but way too thick and not molded to the hood profile. That is the area where you see the rubbing.

In regards to the hood pad clips, nobody has been able to make a good quality metal style clip. I always suggest trying to source good originals when possible.

The pad was on the car when I got it and did not appear molded, just cut to shape and held on by plastic clips/push pins.

I've already pulled it off and tossed it (and polished scuffs on the air cleaner) but wasn't sure if I should look into a different one.

Since there is no undercoating on the car I may be better off without it.

Thanks for the info everyone, much appreciated.

The chrome was rubbed off of my hemi air cleaner top, about 1.5" around. If looking from front of car 11 o'clock, original hood insulation.
