70 Coronet - Rebuild

Finished blocking first round of high build. Had a few low spots that we filled with icing and blocked down, then applied second round of high build.

Getting a little closer.

I forgot to take pictures of the second round of primer and blocking, but remembered at the end of the third round. Here’s a pic after blocking the third time. Only had a few spots to applying icing.

Had a local body guy stop out and check our progress and provide feedback. He thought car was really close to being ready for color so my brother and I sprayed fourth coat of high build tonight.

Based on how it looked while primer was wet, the body guy said to just sand with 400 grit till the black guide coat is gone and it’s ready for sealer and color.

Finally!!

Looks great!! Well done!!

Before final blocking, my brother and I wanted to get undercoating and color sprayed on inside of fenders. We also wanted to get paint shot over the seam sealer we applied between inner and outer fenders. Sprayed undercoating last night and covered with color tonight.

I also received my new wheels this week. Planning to paint them body color and use the caps we bought last year. I think they will look sharp.

One step closer.

Made a little more progress this weekend, shot color on inside of doors and rear upper trim panels. Also shot color on underside of hood, hood springs and hood latch support.

We already sanded door jambs and plan to shoot color on those next weekend. Just wanted to give inner door paint plenty of time to harden to avoid issues with masking tape.

I have all the new interior vinyl, carpet, headliner, etc. in dark blue, but thinking car would look better with white interior, so I posted all these items for sale in interiors forum. Not sure if I’ll find any takers, but I’m hoping for the best before dropping another couple grand plus on buying the white components.

I learned a valuable lesson today. Being this is my first experience with painting, I learned that it’s important to find out when buying paint that you need to ask what the recommended sealer color is supposed to be.

Pretty much all the areas I’ve painted already aren’t exterior panels like trunk, engine bay, underside of hood, etc. were over white epoxy primer. But today we were painting the door jambs and the paint shop said we were supposed to use black sealer before spraying the base per manufacturer recommendations. What I found was a totally different finish color than I expected.

The bright side is this color matches the dark blue interior I have already bought so I no longer need to try and sell to replace with white. Bad news is I need to repaint hood and engine bay. Not so worried about trunk area, but not fixing other areas would be a mistake. Live and learn I guess.

Ended up repainting the engine bay, underside of hood, etc. using black sealer beforehand. I think this will help match better than before. Lightning makes all the difference too. Paint looks dark until you put a light on it and then the blue really jumps out.

Now it’s time to mask off painted areas and start final blocking outside of car.

Spent the last two days working on final blocking on outside of car in prep of paint. Then we used water to check surfaces to make sure everything looks straight.

Found a couple little areas where we need to sand a bit more, but otherwise it’s ready for paint. Plan to touch up those areas and paint this coming weekend.

Looking forward to seeing this in paint, going to look great!

The old girl got her new skin yesterday. We finally got it painted.
