I am looking at a 73 340/auto, what is it worth?
I have been restoring a cuda and know very little about the B-bodies.

Car smokes a little(oil) when it is revved, gas tank is questionable(guy was using a gas can and electric FP to start the car, several wires were cut and one red wire under the dash was basically taped to another, could not see where it went or came from. Front left bumper is knocked in about an inch or 2, causing the fender to block driver door from opening. It is triple black and front seats are cloth and rear vinyl, could not find any rust, except where the vinyl was and a small spot on the front fender, where the fender was creased. Guy told be the parking brake was frozen and that is why when he tried to go in reverse the passenger wheel would not turn, could this be a rearend problem?
Small dings every where, but nothing major except fron left.

Hood pins need a key to unlock, they are not like my Cuda's, where the pin sticks through and you lock down with a pin.

All seats need recovering, dashpad is shot and I am not sure of the charging system.

I do not have any pics(forgot) or vin, though I did verify that it is a H engine and the front windshield is cracked and needs to be replaced.

So ballpark, what is the car worth?
He is asking mid $5k.

TIA

Based on what you observed as needing, not knowing if number matching, has a fender tag and clear title, mileage, the internals of engine, is rear and/or trans shot(you didn't say if it moved forward), visable accident damage plus what you didn't mention(bumper, grill, inner fender, radiator and support and most importantly, frame and suspension). In my opinion and this is based on you doing all repairs, $2500 max. Just to give you a guide to go by, I paid $10,500 for a 2 owner '74 Rallye 440 survivor with 48,806 miles, rust free, factory air, am/fm stereo, rear defogger, original down to unused spare and plastic carb adjustment screw covers. All I had to do was replace fuel tank, replace complete exhaust and cracked driver side manifold, rebuild carb and polish 36 years of dull out of the paint. Still needs bumpers rechromed and damaged radiator neck fixed.

Frame is good and needs front bumper and rear re-chromed. Tranny seems good and matching numbers.

I was thinking $5k, I haven't even seen 318 base cars for $2500.

I got my 74 RR for 3K.
A base 318 car.
Probably not matching. Starts, runs, drives, and stops.
Needs new tank, exhaust.
Work to get more than iginition and headlights working electrically.
Needed a windshield.
Missing passenger mirror,
Needs working horn, etc. etc.
Has satellitee interior, wrong buckets, leaking sunroof, and needs headliner.

Some guys say I was crazy, others say I stole it.

The point I am trying to make is don't jump at the first decent deal you run into, unless it is "exactly" what you are looking for. There are several projects for sale that people bought thinking they were going to end up with a show car, only to find out it's only worth half their investment and all they have is a so-so driver. From what you described, there are better cars out there for less money and you can drive them now. It took me almost a year and a couple thousand miles to uncover my '74.

Thanks but I have looked at a bunch of Chargers, mostly base and SE's, I just want to know what a Rallye is worth?

If you can get some pics, I can help you better. Without, it's a toss up. I don't want to discourage you or piss you off and I don't want to give you bad info and have you get in over your head financially. Driveable Rallyes go anywhere from 4K upwards to 60K depending on it's condition and what the seller is asking. Like I said prior, based on your description, especially the damage viewed, $2500 max. I can give you several examples of cars, especially '73 Rallyes that I looked at last summer. A 340 auto "real daily driver" for $4500. Mechanically it was fine. It needed the entire body replaced. Every body and floor panel was rotted out and I mean bad. Interior was put together from probably 10 different non Charger cars. I looked at an all original yellow '73 400 4speed with under 60,000 miles for 45K. Nice car but I could buy a real nice '71 R/T for half that. A rallye red 340 auto ac car needed a few components just 35 miles from me for $8500. Previous poor rear quarters and floor panels, terrible paint, everything interior wise needed to be replaced, but it drove. So, to just answer what's a Rallye worth, 4K to 60K.

Here is a '73 Rallye I missed out on in Nov 09 for $11,500. All it needed was a driver.

wish it were in better shape for you.id look for something you wont have to put 300 hrs into just to look and run good and a lot of cash after you buy

I think its sad when we go looking at a car and want one that we always say "whats it worth" and I have been doing that a lot as of late.

Its also sad that the 73-74 cars are not getting the respect from the parts people like their later brethren are. I'm sure there are 72's that are not getting the parts made as well. I do know the 72 Road Runner grills need to be reproduced.

I saw a 73 Charger Rally on ebay and it is in FL looks like it needs no work and in a classic car dealership and it has not sold the last time I saw it. The reserve had not even been met and I think bidding went to 8-10 thousand. I also think it was a 340 car.

I do think these cars some day will hit a good market but never never as high as the 72 and back cars.

If you can find a car that needs a little work and you can enjoy, buy it and enjoy the heck out of it.

If you want to mod one of these I dont think you would be hurting it as of right now and you may be helping it...unless some one wants an original car but then again I don't see guys knocking over people to get one right now.

Buy a car, enjoy it for what it is, drive it, drive it and I mean drive it. I have been down the road of the show car world and always worrying if someone or something was going to scratch the paint.

I made a vow to myself what ever MOPAR I buy next I WILL ENJOY IT!!! If its a rare HEMI car I will drive it.

Agree on all points,we bought a 73 charger early last year it was a basket case the P.O. dissembled it and misplaced/tossed out all the hardware, factory a/c components ect. i have spent the last year doing metal work alone we are now doing body work and primer. We don't have much invested so far and don't intend to make a show car out of it,i don't beleve in dumping a ton of cash in a general grandma car [limited production or rare car yes] it will never be worth my investment. My goal on this car is 10 grand or less and so far we got a lot of room. It depends what your wanting i would keep looking there are several for sale here but they are a little steep for condition and there were a couple nice ones that were a little steep [clones? option questions]. Be patent you'll find one that will fit the bill,i like the 71-74 body styles and now that i have been rebuilding one i have learned the issue areas and what to look for on them so i'll never have to go thru this again.

Try to find ANY 62-74 Mopar with good quarters for $2500...good luck with that :)

If you can verify there's never been any rust or bondo in the quarters it's worth at least $2K just for the OEM quarters.

If you don't buy it, shoot me the contact info.

Without knowing the condition and what all is needed thats a hard question honestly, Big difference bettween a DD and a show car and everything in bettween.. Maybe pictures would help but without actually seeing it and checking it out its hard to give an answer. Prices of parts it needs to make it what you want should be considered, If you pay 5 K for it, will 2-4 K more make it what you want or would it take more. Not trying to discourage you myself just trying to give an honest response and all we could do is guess. Good luck with what your after.

Randy, I will be selling my 73 340 auto rallye with 88,000 original miles on it as soon as it is done. I am hoping by the end of september. It is white, white vinyl top, with blue interior. It is 100% original, just had to replace the front and rear brake lines and the previous owner changed the fuel line. It will have almost (didn't do original door handles or mirrors)all the chrome, stainless, and aluminum professionally redone, brand new paint, new brakes, radiator(recored original), new gas tank and sending unit, and new vinyl top. The car was heavily undercoated back in the day and sat in a gravel lot, so all the floors are perfect. The interior is all in great shape (just gotta find a couple of blue seat buttons). I am debating on what to ask when it is done, but I think I am going to be around $20k give or take.

When do you think this car will be completed? I'm not in the market but I like the colors you described your car will be (and was).

btw... this post started over a year ago.

Sure they aren't 340 J heads? Same casting, just bigger valves. 72/3 340 have J heads.

How about the 302 heads, I think thats the number, larger valves or different angle, something like that? from a 318 out of a 89 pickup?
