Hey All

First time poster. long time Mopar lover.

I have an opportunity to pick up a 63 Dodge 440. The asking price is $5900. The good points are that it is a survivor with all its original equipment, paint and interior. I can even read a few of the painted/chalked codes on some of the parts. It has no rust! The paint is in very good shape. Someone took great care of this car over the years.

The down side, it is a 4 door with a 318.

Now, that is not a bad thing as it is very similar to the car my parents had and gave me in high school. However, it's not a 2 door hardtop with a big block!

It's been for sale for a while and I believe that the price is negotiable. I don't have time or money for a basket case.

Just as an FYI, I'm retired and looking for something to do, but as I said, I don't want to do a heavy duty restoration. I would also not consider a conversion of this car to a 2 door -- just too good original shape to be hacking into it. I've had in the past a 56 Desoto, 63 Dodge, 65 Dodge, 68 Charger, 69 Charger, 73 Charger, and currently have a 2005 Dodge Magnum 5.7 RT. I am a Mopar nut and always have been.

So, what do you think? What would you offer if it were your money. It may not be the car I want, but it is the car I can afford.

Thanks for your help.

Hey Mike it sounds to me you wont be happy with this car because its not a BB or a 2 dr even though it sounds good-no rust and all...Id wait and see what comes up in the craigs list around there-

But if your up for a great 4 dr Driver and it reminds you of your younger days id offer 4K.

Not to me. But thats me as I would want a 2 door and no matter how great of shape a 4 door is in I would not want a 4 door. But some people like 4 doors and there is nothing wrong with it at all if you dont mind a 4 door. Its just not for me as I like the NSS look and they were all 2 doors. Ron

I can't say I won't be happy, but I think we'd all like 2 door models, and so would I. Craig list around here is VERY thin on 62-65 Mopars and when the do come up, they are either basket cases or a bit over the top and "molested" to the point that you're not sure what you're walking into. I think that 4K is reasonable. Not sure he'll accept that, but it's a good negotiating start. It would be just a driver that happens to be in great shape.

Thanks for your input.

And that is the problem I'm having. I'd much rather have the 2 door big block, but this could be a lot of fun with not too much work. I have done a lot of work on my cars over the years and I know what to do in many cases. I'm just not sure at my age (63) that I have the patience, time and space to rehab what I can afford. I'm not sure that I'm going to make an offer on this -- just wanted to get a take from some of those who are Mopar nuts like me.

Thanks for your input.

Nothing wrong with a 4 door IMO - all depends on what you want to do with it..

Stumper, that is very nice!! I know that 2 doors are the choice pick, but there obviously are exceptions -- you've got one!

Thanks for your take from the "other side."

Personally I like the look of the four door 62-65 b bodies. Of course most people would prefer a two door if given the choice, sure. but if the four door is your option I think they can look cool.
I'd like to get a four door and do something really different with it like a turbo wedge motor or something similarly crazy! Maybe make it rear engined?

My 65 plymouth 4 dr when I was 18 was great and the extra roominess was nice...Plus I like bench seats-I really like the functionallity of 4 dr's- and with alot of people getting in and out its the cats A$$ and that 63 looks great with the side trim and clean condition.
Thumbs up on the car

Now you're sounding like my brother! He has some great ideas, but not sure if the money would be worth it. Outside of the Charges I've owned, everything else was a 4 door, but when I was 18, I still wanted a 2 door. However, I never lost a class race with the 63 Dodge (3 on the tree and 318) at Alton Drag Strip. Thanks for your thoughts -- much appreciated.

What do you think of the price? What would you have in mind for a walk away price? Thanks for your input!

First point out you have other cars ur interested in,
4500max if I really liked the car
but offer 4k first and work up to 4.5k

If he says no way and get lost- give him your number -and after a few days he may call

Look at it this way...you could enjoy the 4 door until something you would rather have comes along. It looks like a very clean car and even though its not a 2 door its still an early MoPar.

I agree with you! Like I've said, it's not exactly what I want, but it is a very clean 63 Dodge, which are getting hard to come by. Ebay is crazy!!

I say if you have the money to spend then why not add another beauty to your collection! If all the other cars that you have are 2 doors why not a 4 door. You have grand kids? Take them out in the 4 door.
I would be careful of the $ aspect of the 4 door. $4000.00 is probably the most that I would spend.

Car looks great, and this looks to me like a great project in the making. I've seen loads of pics of members rides that are 4 doors and they look and are great. I can see this survivor car receiving the big block it always deserved, and you scaring the crap out of your grand kids when you take them out on a Sunday....

Good luck Mike with your decision, and please let us all know of the outcome.

Thanks for the response. I do have grandkids -- one just got his license!!! I agree that $4 to 4500 is a good range. It is in great shape, but it is a 4 door. Again, not a problem, but it's just not as desirable and just not worth as much as a 2 door. Now I just have to justify this to my wife!!
