Real descriptive newspaper. I wonder what he did too.

Are there any laws in town about repairing vehicles?

it says major auto repair was he running a major auto repair business illegally in a residential area or was he like pulling the engine out of his own car on the street? it doesnt explain much its only like a very small paragraph long.

It was 11 p.m., what do you expect? He was probably disturbing the peace. Somethings just require common sense.:argue:

When I lived in Rancho Murieta Ca. , a gated **** yuppie type golf community (and I'm a golf pro) , we had Home Owners ***. rule that your garage door couldn't be left open for any reason other than to come or go from your residents, I was all ways in trouble for 1 thing or another & my place was kept perfect better than most all of my neighbors places, I had a Quad, a Buick, my 68 RR , a Turbo Supra & my Dakota & you needed a permit to park in your own drive way if you had more cars that you garage was intended to hold... My garage was only a 2 car garage & we had 2 teen age drivers, my girlfriend & me... I had to get out of there, get a larger house & garage just to avoid all the fines. I wasn't loud or rude "never ever late at night or burn outs or revving the engine or anything, all the cars were in the driveway no street parking was allowed"... I just had an **** HOA on my butt all of the time, it was ridiculous how much they were hassling me, all my cars were clean & well kept no junk at all, it was like living in a Eco-Nazi state.... Some times it just an unfortunate situation your in....

We call them greed restricted areas i would never purchase in one of those i don't play by the rules most of the time.

Most cities frown on automotive work at the house, especially if the individual is running an unofficial business. I had the luxury of growing up in an area surrounded by busy-body neighbors who kept track of everything I did. I had every agency at the door. BAR, fire dept, police, city enforcement personnel, etc... But somehow I was Mr. Teflon and nothng stuck!

If you are doing shade tree work for people just don't be blatant about it and the best possible advice I can offer is to do low cost quality work for all your neighbors. A happy neighbor is a quiet neighbor!

I did NO work for my neighbors but I'd try to help them fix their cars in THEIR driveway instead. Had one neighbor that tried to 'trap' me so he could have evidence that I was running a business. He still went ahead and filed a complaint against me. That's when WW III started between us. Screw that. I out lived the bastard. I did a lot of engine and rear end work but most of it was not on any cars and if I did work on someone's car, it was inside my shop and mostly out of sight. I guess I'm kinda lucky with that because I have a 1/2 acre and my shop is over 120 feet off the street and no one lives behind me. I don't do much work anymore but from time to time I blow something up just to let these ******** know I'm still here :D

HOA's are nothing more than a mechanism for stripping away your constitutional rights. And the reason is people are too close for comfort and as a result someone is bound to complain. I live in a condo now and I consider myself lucky because I got away with a lot of stuff. I'm one of the quietest people there even while I was disassembling and reassembling a 72 Porsche 911 in the one car garage, starting a vacuum pump repair business in the garage, building a gas tank for a friends boat, pulling and rebuilding an engine for a buddy, drilling the concrete floor for anchors for the Porsche engine stand and general mechanical work as required. This was all before I got my rented shop so I'm never around these days other than to sleep, which is why I'm so quiet. And the kicker is the HOA president who presided during my "condo workshop days" lives two doors away and said "You are so quiet I have no idea if you're in the garage unless I walk by and see you". It's all about diplomacy with the neighbors and a little luck for good measure.

I like the last sentence the best

"A happy neighbor is a quiet neighbor! Agreed but that is a bit on the line. I wonder if the paper thought it be kind of fishy the way they put it "The vehicle had its hood open" Be interesting Meep to hear how it turns out if you see it in there.

When Google Earth first came out with the 'street view' feature I got a call from my wife at work. She was poking around with this new feature with her co-workers (they're all I.T. people) and they were checking out their house addresses. When they punched in our address there it was, a picture of me (face intentionally blurred a bit) doing a brake job on my van in the street. Good thing I don't live in a gated community, my neighborhood is actually pretty hot rod/musclecar friendly.

I live on a busy street in town,I'm always working on cars for people and I always have a mess of car crap in my driveway but no one bothers me. I'm sure it's because I always use my John Deere to clear the side walks on both sides of the street every winter.Matter of fact they often drop off cookies/treats and wine as a thank you.But I'll let you know if that changes lol.

Back in the days when I had my own semi, I bobtailed over to my parents house and pulled in the driveway and went inside.
5 minutes later the local cops were at the door. They explained that they got a complaint that a semi was parked in a residential area.
As I gazed across the street, I noticed the local busybody standing in her doorway and asked if she (I already knew) called in. The cop said he did not have that info and asked me if I had seen the signs about 'No Thru Trucks' as I came in. I said that yes, I had seen them but I was not driving thru the neighborhood but I was making a delivery. He asked me what I was delivering as I did not have a trailer.
I asked him to step inside and showed him the item. It was my present for my parents 40th anniversary.(My car was 34 miles away) The cop changed his attitude very quickly and as we stepped outside (in full view of the neighbor) kicked the front bumper on my truck and stated .." so you are also delivering dirt to your parents house !...Have a great day "
She was one of those people that if your dog peeded on somebodies lawn a mile away, the cops would know about it as it was happening.

our neighborhood isn't to bad.i can work on my cars any time of the day all day long and they don't say a word. Our one neighbor has late nite bon fire parties, doesn't bother me,couple yrs ago when we had an ice storm take out our neighbors electricity we just ran a couple extention cords over from my garage so they could have some electricity for what they needed.Of course i live in smalltown, iowa where news travels faster than light.

I lived in a gated community in Las Vegas and the rules stunk! I wasn't even allowed to change my spark plugs.....

Now I live where there are No Zoning or HOA's.

The flip side of the story is this: some wanna be "shop owner" has broken down cars and crap scattered all across his yard. Yeah, its his yard and I believe he has a right to because it's his yard but the property value of the neighbors home goes down. I bought a home last year and specifically bought a home that didn't have deed restrictions so that I could work on my cars. I keep it clean for my sake, because I like a nice looking yard, drive, etc. The neighborhood I live in now used to have deed restrictions and we have some diehards who still try and enforce them. Over all, I'd say be nice to your neighbor and pick up your junk. Fenders don't belong in the yard.

we have a guy in town that is trying to get something passed thru city council to "beautify" our town which is all well and good, but he is trying to go after everybody, business's to, even the ones outside city limits.A friend of mine has cars parked around his garage and one behind it which is right next to a bike path,so i'm sure alot of people don't want to see that.

I've been through the beautify the city program. The city, in an effort to "clean up the looks" stole my '67 Charger(that I've recently gotten back), a '68 Polara conv., and an '82 Dodge truck. All were in my back yard out of view from the street. If you drove the back alley, where the garbage truck ran, you could see them. The program was nothing more than a way for the city to make money by involving wrecker companies to bid on the job in hopes they would make their money back by selling the cars off. I don't have any issue with someone working on their car or keeping cars around, that's what put food on my table when I was growing up, but there does come a point when it's an eye sore.
