Hello. My first B-Bodyforum post (been on FABO for years).

I have a '71 Charger SuperBee in the shop and the owner would like to do a 6.1 install.

Other than the obvious fuel and electrical work, is there any firewall, tunnel, etc mods that need to happen? I would hate to do all the body and paint only to find out I need to notch the tunnel.

Thanks!

Engine bay no mods, but if using a late model auto trans then yes. A727 bolts right up and no mods needed, same as the 4 spd, but some 5-6 spds may require some hammer work.

Thanks!

I'll get more info from the owner on his plans. I am not sure if he knows much about this swap, a friend of his is talking him into this swap. It's not a bad idea in my opinion, just more work and $$$!

I put a 6.4 with a TKO600 in my 72 charger. We got by with the angle on the motor and tranny. However, when I moved to a ZF six speed, we had to cut the tunnel. Much better fit now and better pinion angle.

The cars owner is picking up his engine and trans today so I am putting together a list of the other "essentials" items to fit the engine and trans.

Wow, this is going to cost some coin!

When the ball gets rolling I will post a thread of the build. Sounds like I get to modify the tunnel. He bought everything from the belt to the drive shaft. I don't know what trans it is yet. Came out of a 300C, so I am assuming it's a 5 speed auto. Should be a fun ride!

you may get by without a lot of tunnel work with the auto. I am just not sure about that. If you can compare it to a 727, that should answer things for you.

How much clearance is needed? The item that concerns me is the console. If I need to modify the top of the tunnel, I am going to run into problems.

Speaking of the auto trans, can the original shifter be used??? OMG. This is going to snowball beyond my wildest dreams isn't it??

The NAG1 is a short trans, but it is tall and wide, also no slip yoke. Tunnel mods are going to happen so there's no getting around it. I think if you keep the height to a minimum you'll be ok with the console. Hell, I raised mine a few inches and widened it alot but my console still bolted right up after some trimming.

I agree. It is probably the idiot that bought mine back in the 80's. LOL!!! Now I am the bigger idiot for selling it to him.

So??? What is wrong with a 425 HP engine that starts the first time and gets 25 mpg?

Are you guys afraid of a challenge??? :violent-smiley-100:

Since the lx based cars use independent rears, the drive shaft is flange mounted on both ends. A custom shaft with a slip on 1 side will be required....or just bolt in a independent rear, matt delaney make a kit to do this, expensive, HELL YEAH!!!!

The purists talk crap and bash you into little bit's. They allways will. They allways do.
Never mind what you want to do to "Your car" for Yourself and enjoyment.

In there eyes, it's only restore to perfection and for some, if your model car is some how a lower model or less equiped car, your garbage yet again.

Screw them and do this swap for what ever reason tickles your fancy and enjoy it. Do it well.

My thoughts exactly. A Gen III Hemi can be swapped into a classic chassis without hacking it up and making it to where it cant be returned to stock.

I want to drive the wheels off of my car with the A/C on while getting 20+ MPG. While I do have a great respect for restorations, Im a hot rodder and dont give a damn about restorating anything to day one stock.

But as they say, milage and opinions may vary. :argue:

Amen brother. :hello2::headbang: I am also a hot rodder with great respect for those that restore cars and do them right. However, that is there gig and not mine and refuse to be bullied, shamed or belittled into doing anything that isn'tme.

Sorry fellas, ya want them like day one, better start purchasing them up, because through your eyes....lol....GOD forbid I get another one to hack up, I will.

I certainly will drive the wheels off of my cars, then puttem back on and drive them off again ... and again, and again, and again.... :blob1:

Nothin like MoPar brotherly love here huh guys?!?!?!?
Unbelieveable!!!!!!!

6.1 into a Charger Super is just wrong!

Hope you guys get over being sick soon. I'll be here with another dose of this modify'in a car.
bstan69rr Seeing how you like to keep the cars as they were in day one, YOU are a big idiot for selling it. But even a bigger one to come here and bitch about what someone else wants to do to THERE car. You got some nerve brother... a term I hate to use right now.

Maybe one day he'll come back and slay ya with his mod. Maybe even with some 22 inch rims and rubber band tires for good measure.

My 2 cents

I've got to chime in to this debate and add my two cents. This is merely my opinion and my own views but also how I feel about all this. If you are fortunate enough to own a very rare car then I think it is wrong to do anything other than keep it original and if it is in poor shape then to do a restoration that returns it back to stock with nothing more than bolt on mods. Bolt on mods does not include modifying a tranny tunnel. There are enough basic models and excess parts to build a modified clone of what ever you want. I do understand that you own your car and it is yours to do with what ever you choose because it is your car. I can relate to both sides of the debate. I own what I believe is a one of one 74 Dodge Charger Rallye that I bought in the early 90's. This car is rallye res with all the rallye package equipment, and equipped with a 318-3 spd. Std. On the column, bench seat, no option car. It sits waiting for someone to repop rear quarters so that a restoration can be started. It is a numbers matching car. It isn't much fun to drive. I would have prefered an SE Brougham or a car equipped like one with buckets, auto on the floor with a console and a few creature comforts like air cond.. Because my car is a one of one I think it would be wrong to change it. In the mean time I will continue to collect parts to restore my Rallye and look for an SE Brougham for a driver. Gregg
