Like any good, experienced, Mopar owner, I like to have a spare ECU and a couple ballast resistors in the tool box in the trunk. I stopped by Autozone yesterday to buy an ECU from them, and the guy who helped me was about my age, in his 50s. He got the part number and went back to get it.

When he came back out, he turned to the kid working at the next station and said "hey junior... when was the last time you sold a guy a computer for his car for $20? That's why!" The kid just shook his head while the older guy explained his co-worker had been dogging him for putting his money into driving older cars instead of buying a fancy new one. :)

Had an alternator in my truck that went bad... Headed to Advanced Auto to get a new one. I mentioned something about the stupid electric system and "it's a shame we can't pop the clutch anymore"...kid didn't have a clue what I was talking about. When I explained it to him, he didn't believe me that you could start a car that way.

I have a friend that runs the automotive program at the local community college. He told me that he gets new kids in his classes who have never seen a carburetor or have any idea how one works. Boy, do I feel old.

funny, i went to autobone today to get an upper radiator hose for my charger. simple right? no. none in stock, not one on the shelf, told me i had to special order it.

I went to our local autozone last time and asked for a set of points for a slant 6. The response: "Wut dat is?" I just walked out.

Dont ever go to a parts store & inquire about parts for a Superbee. Better just say Coronet. Every time they will confuse it with a VW Beetle. Last time I purchased spark plugs I did this & they brought out a set of 4. When I explained they were wrong, they said they had never heard of a Superbee.

It's like McDonalds. If you go outside their box you get "I aint gotta button for dat". I swear, they say it here all the time.

i always look up all my own part #'s before i go get stuff.seems to save a lot of hassle with ignorent parts counter people.whats truely sad is i manage a large shop(16 lifts)and have 5 techs.anytime a car with a carb comes in i normally have to figure out the problems since none of them have worked on carburated cars.these are 30+ year old men with ase (some master)certification.i guess even techs are getting spoiled by technology.:eusa_think:

There are 3 guys that work at my local autozone store. The manager has a 85 camaro built for street/strip(raced it when "pink all out" came to town. Another has a 68 coronet 500, and the other guy who is also my "brother" has a 69 bee,71 RR,78 magnum,84 ramcharger,76 dodge p/u "warhorse". Yeah they know there stuff but the wife still had to order a radiator and up/low hoses for her 96 intrepid.I would think that as many intrepids they built, they would at least have the hoses in stock.

There's a big NAPA store by where I live. It's big enough that they have a wholesale counter in back for the shops and farms in the area. The old pro countermen are usually back there and one of them is even a serious Mopar guy. Unless it's something real simple I go to them. These guys are gold. And yea they don't have every part for everything but they know how to find stuff and they usually have it or can get it in the next day.

the last time i went autobone before today, i had a guy come running up to my duster asking me what year my nova was. i just left .

Would you like a coke and fries with that water pump sir? Oh wait, that was my last job.
For the last 35 years I bought 98% of my parts from a local parts house that I worked at in the 70's. These guys were old timers that really knew their stuff, both new and old. Sadly they closed up about 2 years ago. Sad day other than I bought all their stock of anything that fit Mopars for pennies on the dollar. So now its NAPA for most of my stuff. We have a big *** one too. Out of the 30 countermen there I use 5 of them. Sometimes though I like to jack with the youngins.

Yesterday i took my Belv to a Midas near me to put her on a lift and maybe plan some exhaust changes. Turns out the head tech there is an old Mopar guy w a 650 hp Dart he races at Atco here in NJ. Turns out he's had a few B Bodies in his day and he took me through the car, inspected the whooe underside of the car and gave me his recommendations. lol showed me all the holly and eddie rebuild kits he has in stock. So now i got a local carb guy to boot. Always nice when u find that one sales guy / mechanic who doesnt have his head up his ***.

They always have to know what car it's for if you ask for a part. I say "it doesn't matter cuz it's a different part than what came on the car" They are not use to customizing. It's all "plug & play" these day......

Hell, back "in the day" when my 70 RR was only a couple of years old, I've run into DEALER parts men that didn't know what sixpack nor Dana meant.

I can still remember one guys says to me "the book says here 6 barrel, I didn't known anybody made a 6 barrel carburetor??"

I told him, "Ya know, one day on your lunch break, you really ought'ha take a wander through your own car lot out there"

Also to add that when i call our local dodge dealer to check on a part for my p/u they always ask me for the vin #,WHY,it's 28 yrs old,you don't really need the vin to find a part for it.

It's a sad day when you have to shop on-line for most everything for our great old cars, I use our local Debco/NAPA once in a blue moon, the owner Debbie is very knowledgeable & an ex-roundy round racer, pretty much I generally shop at Summit Racing on-line & usually have the parts on my porch the next day, if I can't get it there, then I go on-line to Mancini Racing or Jegs after that, even Rock Auto rarely, all for better pricing than the O'Rielly & Napa local stores, without the dumb ***, wet behind the ears, tattooed, ear pierced & nose ringed counter squirt, telling you it's not available or doesn't exist, usually too... Sad sort of affairs these days, I really would like to support the local businesses, but they don't really support us any longer, even for my 99 Dakota SLT 4x4...

I use AZ a lot for parts, we had a lady there a few years ago that it didn't matter what part you wanted for an old car she knew what it was.. I don't know why she left but it was great to go there at that time, now you have to draw pretty little pictures for the young and "brilliant" kids. and some are but the least they could do id listen to you explain what it is you need and look it up, not just try to make you feel like someone who shouldn't be driving old cars that arent fit for the road and worse, we don't know what were talking about! There is no age lock on intelligence..
