DMPD officers shoot mountain lion

Wow. Didn't know that Iowa has mountains -- always looks flat as a pancake whenever I drive through. :)

I'm no tree or bunny hugger, but I love nature. I think some other means should have been sought out. Killing something should only be a last resort. It was after all, trying to get away. What a shame.

Yea, like said, I had one as a pet, so I kinda have a soft spot for them. Our animal control folks don't have the equipment to deal with one of these - this was the first actual contact. My son works at the local zoo and while they have tranq. guns, only a few are trained in using them. Add to that the time involved to get someone on scene. There are a couple of schools nearby also. They had to balance the animal's welfare and public safety...
I'm probably the closest thing to an "expert" our department has on these cats, and I was still in bed. (evening shift).

PETA's in town to protest the circus - probably be down at the station later.

They should shoot the PITAs not the mountain lion. Lets see, PITA-Pain In The Anus whackos?

Not me. I guess Iowa DNR can't deny that they exist here any more :icon_lol:

We've had numerous sightings in western Iowa. About 10 years ago, one was hit by a car here in Harlan. A lot of small pets wound up missing in the northern part of town. I think another was shot in the western part of Shelby county or the eastern part of Harrison County. They think they were coming across the Missouri river in the winter.

same basic situation just happened here in vegas with a chimp.officer shot it when it ran towards a crowd.ya,peta and several other organizations desended on us.officer had no choice in the matter when it endangered the public.

My brother went hunting a couple yrs ago in southern iowa south of des moines.Saw some tracks and had the feeling he was being "watched". There were rumors of the big cats being sighted. As far as messing with a chimp, they can rip your face off, even a young one is capable of doing serious damage. When you clicked on the link, did you see the side story about the 61 vette that was parked since 1968?

I kinda agree with RustyRatRod. To bad he had to be shot.
