Is it just me or did it seem like 90% of the cars that crossed the block on Mecum's Auction this weekend on Speed Channel did not sell.
Just about every time I tuned in, it was the same outcome..."close the bidding", "the bid goes on", or "it takes $$$ to buy this one".

The cars looked to be of nice quality.

Is it the market? Poor time of year? Unrealistic reserves?

Just goes to show you what a JOKE that "show" is! that they will pay $$$$ for shinny crap. and let the good stuff "pass"!:werd:

heres my theory should you care to listen :

back when our cars were made..(60's and 70's )...were were just little tikes, grabbing our fathers hand only to be whisked off to the local car dealership to shop for a car with dear 'ol dad. since that time, this excursion has been in our minds,,,,weather subliminally ,,,or deliberate.

as time went on, our love for these machines grew and grew to the point of...." I WANT ONE" ...so we got one...or 2...or 10. now in our teens, the nostalgia of a 15 or 20 year old car has its own shimmer and gleam. we loved these cars and as life would have it....things get in the way....marriage...family....prison....what have you....and we must part with our shiny pieces of gold.

now that we are older...(in our 50's...or quickly approaching them )...we fondly look back at the days of our youth....shiny fast car under our asses, hott babe sitting next to us....good "like minded" friends that would choose a gathering point and meet for good times.....and we miss those days........so we buy ANOTHER car just like what we once had. i refer this as "mid-life-crisis, and make an attempt to feel like we did when we were young.

so now we have all of these cars....however sparse....and think to ourselves..." i think when i die , i will give my prized posession to my children, so they too can know the thrill of owning such a machine " unbeknownst to us....our children HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST.....and take our prized posession to an auction house....or a used car lot...or put it on craigslist or EBAGG or the like .

the point im trying to make here is....our cars...no matter how important to us they are, are not necessarily important to the "next generation" of gearheads....and the latest generation really dont know what the hell these cars are or what they represent. face it guys, we the last of a certain breed of people that live, eat, sleep cars!

and thats my theory as to why these cars dont sell like "we" think they should. ask any 19 year old today what a ROAD RUNNER is....or a SUPER BEE....they have no idea. they will tell you about the new VW- GLS....or some other rice burning roller skate, and how " this chip can do this"...or " another chip can do that". our time is a time long gone by and kept alive by us, and when we are gone, so will our beloved pieces of gold!

x2 tpodwdog! Most of the kids nowadays don't care if they even get a drivers license!much less about what they are driving!

Hi 69 when was that on Speed,i must have missed it

all too true. i remember as a teenager driving my first Mopar, 70 Satellite vert, 318, 3 on the tree, and having to pull over on the shoulder of the NJ Turnpike,in the snow, to jimmy rig the linkage that popped off the worn ball joint. most kids today would call AAA on their cell phone. that's why i made it a point to show my son AND daughter the mechanics of older cars, and made sure they both drove stick (their first car for a year was a 4 speed). one of my proudest days was one afternoon my daughter was driving home from school and backing up, hit a curb. she called me and told me the muffler was hanging down hitting the floor. i told her to look and see if the muffler had a hook on it and to look above it to see if there was a rubber piece that it hooked into. she said yes. i told her to get the work gloves out of the trunk and see if she could lift it back up and reconnect it. she said hold on and 2 minutes later said DONE. her girlfriend who was in the car with her was in awe!!!! it is our generation's responsibility to teach our kids and instill the love of REAL cars. my son can't wait for the day when he can call my 70 RR his own. i told him not to hold his breath and get his own !!!! LOL

Lot of reserve prices didnt get met but there were a lot of decent deals as well. Its a sign of the economy as well as a bad time of year to sell a car is my thought too. You dont see kids at those auctions only people with money and they are usually older to begin with. I have it recorded. I like to see what that market is doing and what cars are selling for. One thing you dont see on TV is the actual quality of the restoration as well. People there get to see the flaws and waves and bad body work so they wont bid more than they think its worth as well.

Way too high of expectations & reserves, it's not 2007 anymore, some sellers still think it is, I think... there were some great deals too IMHO, especially Thursdays... by the way it was on Velocity channel part of the Discovery Network, not Speed channel...Collector car prices have come down probably 25% or more in many cases from there 2007 highs... Resto-Rods are the bigest sellers it seems now...

I dunno, I take a different view with the auction shows and even those stupid Fast & Furious movies. Seems to me they're driving our hobby to evolve to fit the younger generation. 20 years ago we all talked about #'s matching, original miles and redline tires. Now it's restomods, aluminum heads, soundproofing and stereos. so even if 20" wheels arent your thing, i think they're part of a bigger picture that's helping to keep our cars relevent. without it they might as well bury our cars when they plant us in the ground.

yea the modded 57 Chebbies were bringing more than completely stock ones .. that z28 that went acorss the board at less than 5k was a steal.. there were some great deals for sure.. Mercedes top o line car with less than 80k on it for peanuts

Amazing how you can pck up a low mileage 10 year old $85k european sedan for $25k, right? Makes you wonder why people ever buy em new.

I would hope that you would have a close enough relationship with your children to be able to determine whether or not they would be interested in inheriting your classic car(s). I'm fairly certain mine would not, although there's still time.

IMO, the Mecum auctions are much more realistic than the barret jackson.
I see decent deals on the Mecum shows frequently.
I watched two hours of them yesterday, and without actually counting, it looked like about 60-70% did sell.
I was a bit disappointed that neither of the commentators knew that lime green was not available in 73, or that the 73 and up scoop on the 340 Duster was not correct. They seemed to know their pontiacs, and mustangs, though.

I am not from the "muscle car" generation, but a generation behind.
Just as there is still a market for pre-war and 30s/40s/50s cars, there will be a market for 60s and 70s cars as well.
The advantage these cars will have over, say the post 90's cars, is that most of the newer cars must have all of thier high tech systems operational, which will be a tremendous challenge as they age.

YY1....i dont have children...... do you want my cars when i go ? none of my neices or nephews could give a damn about my cars. heres the response i get when they find out i bought another car................."....UNCLE DAVE, WHY DO YOU HAVE THESE CARS?....WHY DONT YOU SELL THEM AND BUY A NEW ONE ! " i just roll my eyes at them like a snotty little teenager and blurt out " you just dont get it doya ?"
