Daddy started with the post office in 1946, fresh out of his stint in the Navy in WWII. I remember him tellin us all they had in Macon was three model T trucks and everybody else walked. I remember he even wrote President Nixon urging him to consider making more mailmen walk to conserve energy. He always said the post office was lazy and wasteful...especially when they got those little Jeeps. He contended that all of those routes could be walked....and he was right. He was a carrier for 36 years, until mama got sick with cancer and he had to retire "early" for him anyway. I can remember him coming home talking about the union guys trying to strongarm all of them to join. He never did. He crossed picket lines to keep food on the table. Yeah, I reckon he was a scab......but he was smart. He knew the unions weren't gonna pay him ****. Never had a use for the unions. He saw it even back then. He'd be mortified if he was alive to see the kinda service the post office is givin today.
