It's been an ongoing thing with me and my buddies.Of course they're all Chevy guys.I've outrun 383 stroker 4.10 geared El Camino's,big block trucks,big block Chevelle's and Nova's with very little done to a small block A body.And they all used to dog me and the car because it was a Mopar.I've ended many bench racing sessions just by saying "King Hemi".And I always loved saying that Chevy has always had an abundance of aftermarket parts and it took so long for the aftermarket parts to get to Mopar's because Chrysler's ran so good from the factory they didn't need them while the GM's needed all the help they could get.There is a reason why they still run a version of the Chrysler Hemi in top fuel and not a version of the 454.

How about this for a mopar vs. chevy story? Back in the early 70's my grandfather was taking the family out for ice cream in their v code 70 roadrunner (dad and his 3 sisters in the back seat, him and grandma up front) and a souped up 70 z28 camaro full of teenagers pulls up along side wanting to go at it. When the light turned green pops SMOKED the camaro like it was standing still. My old man tells me this same old story atleast once a week and it never gets old. I can only imagine the look on those kids faces when the guy in a plane jane looking car destroyed their car that they thought was so great.

I used the 440 and 426 as an example. You saw neither of those against a 396 in stock eliminator. That was my point. For whatever reason, the 383s were faster than the big motors. Tirespin, quicker rev, but who knows? If you read stock eliminator history, you'll see the 343 HP 383 mopped the floor with the competition. I kinda got off on a tangent with the big motors. My mistake. In stock eliminator, you would have never seen a 440 against a 396 anyway, because it was too much of a cubic inch spread. Now, the 383s routinely wasted 409 chebbies. Pontiac anf phord were never any competition. The never had any street cred at all, IMHO. Well......phord was closer. But pontiacs were just straight up slow.

The 396 was a good motor. All the big chebbies were. They were just plagued with valve train issues. If you got those cleared up, they could be a good motor. But they were HEAVY. That was one big factor as to why Mopars came out on top time and time again. Other makes made comparable power. But none was as light. Unibody construction, lightweight iron castings. Plus, Mopar had all the strength in the right places. Deep skirted blocks, stock connecting rods bigger than ANY LS6 or LS7 rod....not to mention the huge six pack rod. Intake designed to be sealed from the hot engine heat. It was the total package.
don't forget distributor in front where you can get at it with ease and water pump separate from WP housing, cool sound of high torque gear reduction starter, and steel cranks on all 383's

I always thought it was because of the low end torque they had, Im no engine builder at all but this is what ive heard before a few times, Im sure someone hear knows the answer.

It's entirely possible. I know it was before my time. I find it funny that the smaller cube motors worked out so much better, but according to history that was the case.

Ok I guess I have to throw mine in here.
My grandfather and uncle both owned and operated the same parts store in Northern Michigan since somewhere around WWII (or at least i think so). Either way when I was a kid 80's-early 90's they were die hard chevy owners...both had 80's chevy trucks, GM cars etc. In 89 my uncle bought a Dakota which he kept until a year ago. Well that thing set off a chain reaction. In the early 90's we got a Plymouth Voyager then in 96 my dad bought a Dakota, in 98 my grandfather jumped into a dakota after years and years of chevy's. Everytime I am in that truck with him he says "listen to that engine purr, Dodge always did make a good engine"....and this year he is looking at buying a new Ram truck. I asked him why he wanted a Ram and he said because Dodge doesn't make the dakota anymore. Basically he is hooked.
In 03 my uncle bought a Hemi Ram and he loves it, then both me and my dad bought one....its become an illness that has spread like wild fire.
I went from a honda Civic to a stable that includes nothing but mopar and don't care to go back.
I should mention that when my uncle was asked by the local chevy dealer (owner) why he didn't come buy a new Chevy...he told him "because my Dodge just doesn't break"....
