New to Mopar, so I know very little about them and need some help. I just traded for a 67 GTX and the seller was positive it has a 1964 426 max wedge short block with 440 top end. I just got the car today and haven't had time to check all the block #'s yet, but did find these: The pad by the distributor is stamped V 426 1 24 HP and the front face of the block has casting AAQA 1R. I haven't found the blocks's casting # yet? Any ideas as to what this is? Thanks in advance!!

sounds like a max block or could be...all maxies were high nickel block with AAQA cast on front of block in large letters.

Yes, the AAQA are large and are cast in the block. I guess I'm going to drive the car some and see how it is on the street, a previous owner had installed the engine for racing and I don't have any specs on it.

be careful...even streeet max is 11.5 to one compression with bigger combustion chambers in max head , compression could also be
as much as 13.56 to one ....wow ! so use the best gas you can buy and watch timing to prevent detonation . just a little detonation will melt ring lands in pistons , so again be careful !

V 42 Designates It As A 426 Street Wedge Block! But In A '67????

He already knows it is a 64 motor and not original to the car. If the motor has a 440 top end, the heads could be 915's, 906's or later 452's so the compression may be lower than a stock 64 street wedge but not much if the pistons have never been changed.

Post a picture of the engine pad.

THE PREVIOUS OWNER THOUGHT THE HEADS WERE 906 CASTINGS, i'LL CHECK TO BE SURE AND TAKE A PICTURE OF THE PAD TODAY. I've never posted a picture on this site before, hopefully I can figure it out.

Here is a picture of the pad. Notice the numeral "6" stamping is different. 426Wedge.jpg

Did you read the other thread about how to identify a true Max Wedge block?

You may need to prepare yourself for some information that conflicts with what the buyer told you.

Yes, I read all of that and have decided it's a street wedge, someone requested a picture of the pad, that's why I posted it. The car was cheap, seems to run good, and if it had been a max wedge block, that would've been icing on the cake. Thanks to all who helped.

this is what a hi compression mw pad looks like DSCN0399.jpg

here's what a hp pad looks like as you might notice the 6 is also missing here or is very lightly marked which seems to be common on these dates must of been a bad beer day at the plant??

That 6 was added by someone who probably thought it was missing from the factory. It looks like they used a punch. LOL But I believe the street wedges only had the 42 on them - no 6. Here's a pic of mine.

His Opening Post Sounds Like He Wasn't Sure If It Was A 426 Street Wedge!!!!

A Max Wedge will have "MP" after the year on the stamp pad. A 64 Max will be VMP 426 where the V designates 64 and MP designates Maximum Performance. Max Wedge is short for "maximum performance wedge head engine". What you have is a street wedge HP and a nice find for someone with a 64 Fury. Or just run it if it's in good shape. I'm putting my old 426 block into action in my 69 RR.
